You know, I've got my own take on the legal status and definition of "marriage"... frankly, I think the goverment should get the hell OUT of the marriage business alltogether.
But the fundies don't really care about the "marriage" argument so much. It happens to be the current "line in the sand" that they are trying to draw, but that's really about all. In reality, it's not gay marriage they are opposed to. It's just GAYS. They aren't so much opposed to them getting married, as they are opposed to them *existing* in the first place.
And that's where I just can't fathom their desire to exclude or punish or sanction others for being different.
When I see two people in love... I mean really, really in love... young, old, gay, straight, white, black, brown, red, Christian, Muslim, Atheist, Zoroastrian, beautiful people, or people who were beaten with an ugly stick... they all have the same effect on me. It's the love that shines through... not whatever group they happen to fall into. I get that deep, warm, "awwwwwww" feeling in my gut. I just don't understand how anybody can look at the same thing, and think of ugliness or fear. *sigh*
I look at the below, and I think, "This is what the hard-core Catholics and other fundies are all up in arms about?!"
Sinjoyla Townsend and Angelisa Young said they had waited years to marry. They were first in line last week to apply for a marriage license at Washington's marriage bureau.
"You are my friend, my partner, my love," Young, 47, told Townsend, 41. "I will love you today, tomorrow and forever."
After the wedding, those present cheered as the two women embraced and cried. They have been together for 12 years and have children, according to biographical information from the Human Rights Campaign.
Said one opponent of same-sex marriage, "Dear God in Heaven. We can't have friendship, committment, and love springing up all over the place. What sort of Gemorrah do you think this is?!"
