Black Friday 2k11

Nov 26, 2011 00:58

Alright, so Thanksgiving was moderately uneventful. I got vacation block N so I have been off clinics since Monday, which is marvelous. Will, Lindsay, and all associated parental units took off on a cruise Sunday, and as far as I know they are still out on the water, so I did turkey day with Clint's family. I woke up in time for the parade, and spent some time helping his mom cook. Clint woke up just in time for Santa, and we hung out and watched football for a few hours. Ate dinner at 2:30-3ish and left Keystone at about 4 so we'd have time for a nap before heading out shopping.

Black Friday was ridiculous this year. First of all, most major stores opened at 12AM, with Walmart opening at 10PM. Online sales went live Wednesday night. Speaking of which, the big item Clint and I were after this year was a nice vacuum. Ours was graciously left by Melissa when she moved out, but it was never my favorite vacuum (can't complain too much about a free vacuum), and it completely died about 2 weeks ago. Between Sasha's amount of shedding and the 5 foster cats we're currently housing, it was time to invest in a solid vacuum. I've always eyed Dysons, but could never bring myself to even consider spending $500+ for a vacuum. Target had them on sale for $279, and we decided that was worth it. So when I saw on bfads that Target's online Black Friday sale was live Thursday morning, I went ahead and ordered the vacuum. I do love buying stuff in store on BF, but I figured it was better to be safe than sorry, since our floors are already in dire need of cleaning. That was the first of 2 items I would buy on my phone within 24 hours.

After getting home we tried to nap, but I couldn't sleep. We had decided since Target was no longer a huge priority, that we'd check out Walmart at 10PM and see how many items we could cross off our list before Target opened. That was hands down the most crowded store I have ever been in. There was absolutely no crowd control. Clint and I got separated multiple times, and just sort of decided to get as many items as we could find (Walmart ran out of printed store maps and the merchandise was everywhere) and meet up periodically. Top thing I wanted to grab was a memory foam mattress topper, but I could not for the life of me find them. On the way to the back of the store I grabbed a box of candles for $5 and a bake 'n store glass pyrex thing for $19. I found someone who had the mattress toppers and asked where she'd gotten them. She gave me vague directions that included the phrase "on the other side of that crowd," then asked if I knew how much they were. I told her they were $28.88, and she decided she didn't want them. She offered me hers, but they were king sized and wouldn't fit on our bed. I decided to head off, leaving Clint with the Pyrex box since it was heavy (they had also run out of shopping carts), in search of a mattress topper. I ran around in circles a few times, asking at least 3 more people where they had grabbed their mattress toppers, getting different directions each time, before I grew too frustrated with the crowd and ducked into a non-doorbuster aisle. Clint had texted me his whereabouts, so I went into home living to meet up with him. When I finally found him, he had the pyrex box AND a mattress topper! He said there had been 4 left when he found where they were, and he grabbed the last full size. Good teammate. One of the other items I'd wanted was a wax burner/air freshener thing, so I left Clint stationed in home goods and looked around the surrounding area for where they were. I ended up finding a display case that was turned around so that you couldn't get the items, and saw that they were in there. I crawled down the side of it, between 2 displays, and grabbed a blue one from the middle. It actually was sort of stuck, so a guy on the other side of the display who had crawled in to hand some to girls he was with helped tip the display case just enough to free mine. Along the way I also grabbed a $7 tupperware set and $7 memory foam bath mat. I had wanted a printer from Walmart, but that sale didn't actually start until midnight, and there was no way I was going to sit in Walmart for an hour and a half, so we headed to the checkout line. The big problem with Walmart was that there was no one organizing the lines. They went back out from the registers like they normally would, right in the path of where a bunch of hot items were located in the main front aisle. So it was a complete cluster of people not wanting to let others pass for fear of losing their spot in line, and people trying to get the items they'd come for. Disaster. It took us probably 30-40 minutes in line to check out, and we headed to Target.

Target didn't open until midnight, and we got there around 11:20, so we had to wait outside in line. We were a little nervous, because the line went from the door to the corner, down the side of the building, then wrapped around the back of the store when we got there. I made the call to get in line, rather than wait at the front of the store for the line to die down, which turned out to be a good call since about 150 people got in line behind us before the doors opened. We made some friends in line, and Target employees came by handing out energy bars and store maps. Gotta love Target. The only downside in line was when we were turning the corner to get to the front of the building, a random guy got in line behind us, next to the woman who had been behind us. I thought it was someone that woman knew, but I gave her the girl look, the look you give friends in clubs when you need to know whether they need rescuing from a certain guy, and quickly determined that this dude was a stranger to all of us. And he was wasted. You could smell the liquor. He kept saying ridiculous things, so I ended up subtly letting him pass us in line since the girl behind us was shopping alone. I almost got a cop's attention to get him out of line, but figured it wasn't worth his drunk unpredictable reaction to getting kicked out. We saw him twice in the store, but other than that it ended up being an uneventful encounter. It only took us 15-20 minutes after opening to get in the store; they were letting people in 30 at a time to avoid a mob scene. #1 on my list there was a firebowl for Will for Christmas. Completely random, but they have a yard now and are going to be entertaining in the near future. I also got a bunch of towels and pillows at Target last year that have been great, and wanted to repeat that success. Clint and I strategized so that I would go for the fire pit and he would grab a bunch of towels. I had asked one of the employees handing out maps in line if he knew where the fire pits were, so I had a heads up and went straight for them. Clearly, the best place for a fire pit is in the infant section, so I am glad I asked. There were a bunch of them, though they were very popular, so I grabbed one and headed back toward Clint. On my way back I grabbed Knocked Up Weeds season 6 on DVD, and looked quickly for The Office, though I knew Target hadn't advertised it. Clint grabbed a crap ton of bath towels and a few hand towels, so we headed off for pillows. The $3 pillows this year were not nearly as good as the ones last year, so we passed on those. We needed a cart, though, and I had seen some near the fire pits, so I left Clint at the pillows and went off for a cart. I wanted a few jump drives, and I figured once we had a cart we'd never be able to get into electronics, so I ran in and grabbed 3 jump drives and one micro SD card for Clint's phone before getting a cart. In just those few minutes the fire pits were almost completely gone, so I'm glad I headed there first. I had also wanted to grab a photo frame set as a gift for Lindsay, so we headed over to where those were and easily picked one up. Then we headed over to the kitchen section just to see what they had. I've needed a wire rack for a while, so Clint threw one of those (regrettably not on sale) into the cart, as well as a zero water pitcher, since our brita keeps breaking. I also grabbed a snowman mug, since I prefer to drink warm beverages out of a snowman mug during winter, and mine broke in a tragic cabinet accident last year. That was really all we'd come for, since I bought the vacuum that morning online, so we headed to the checkout. The line was weaved through the aisles of the cosmetics section, so it was out of the way and cutting was avoided. It went very quickly, and we actually passed the endcap that had our vacuum. 2 left when we checked out, so we could have waited, but this was much less stressful (at least until it comes time to track the shipment). We checked out quickly and without incident, and headed to Best Buy.

At about 1:15, there was still a substantial line waiting to get into Best Buy, which kind of scared me since the store had been open for over an hour, but we stuck it out because we both wanted to buy gifts for each other in Best Buy. They also had a printer I wanted to check for, since I'd missed out on the Walmart printer, and The Office DVDs. It took us probably 45 minutes just to get into the store, 2 hours after opening! Clint said he'd be in car audio, so I told him not to try to find me, and that I'd meet him either after we checked out or if I couldn't find what I'd wanted to get him. Bfads advertised a while ago a PS3 move bundle with 2 games and a big gun and a whole bunch of stuff, but I'd never seen it advertised anywhere else. About a week and a half ago bfads added it to their Best Buy circular listing, but it wasn't in the print ad in our newspaper. I was definitely nervous, because it was my best idea for a gift for him. I asked an employee if it existed, and showed him a screenshot of bfads on my phone, and he showed me where they were - $20 cheaper than on bfads! So as he handed me the box, I told him I had to ditch my boyfriend and would come back for it. I found Clint in car audio and made sure he didn't see me. I then went on a hunt for The Office. The spot where it would be in the TV on DVDs rack was sold out, so I was a little sad since getting the next season of The Office on DVD has kind of become a Black Friday tradition for me. I decided to hunt a little more, and ended up finding a copy in the bottom of a wire crate of DVDs. Then I grabbed the video game bundle and headed to the checkout line. Luckily the Best Buy line also weaved through some aisles, mostly large appliances, so I could be sure Clint didn't see me or his gift. After I checked out and had the box put in 4 bags so he couldn't see through it I found him in the checkout line and told him I'd wait for him at the front of the store. It was waiting there that I realized I had totally forgotten to even look for the printer. Oh well, no going back at that point.

We went to Old Navy after Best Buy because I have been in dire need of some jeans. I got two pairs and got in line. The Old Navy line was ridiculously long (30+ minutes), so I checked my phone in the meantime. Just like last year, bfads emailed out saying Walmart's online sale went live at about 3AM. I decided to try to get the printer I'd wanted, so I went to walmart.com on my phone while waiting in line at Old Navy. I had a lot of trouble getting the pages to load; I would put the item in my cart, then had to log in, then the cart was empty, so I would add it again, then the cart page wouldn't load, etc. At one point I got far enough through checkout to choose what store I wanted to pick up at, then the page refused to load. I ended up just getting frustrated, so Clint and I decided we'd go home after Old Navy for a minute or two to grab a snack and sit down for a minute and I could try for the printer on an actual computer. On the drive home, though, I got an email thanking me for my order from walmart.com. Interesting, since I'd never actually put in payment information. I guess somewhere through the glitches on the one order I'd been logged in for and got halfway through checkout they decided to go ahead and use previous payment info and charged my credit card. Sketchy as hell, but I was glad to get the printer without having to throw elbows some more in Walmart.

We stopped by home, had some Thanksgiving leftovers, and sat down for 10 minutes before going to the mall. First stop was Macy's, because they had a $50 really nice skillet for $11.99. I grabbed that right away, then went searching for their circus waffle maker. Grabbed that for $8, so we will have giraffe-shaped waffles in the near future. I went looking for boots, too, since I've wanted a pair, but none of them look good on my giant calves, so I forewent that. Next stop was Sears for Clint to look for some tools, but he didn't find anything spectacular. Then we went to Bath and Body Works since I've wanted some good-smelling soaps ever since my last one ran out. They were buy 3 get 3 free, so I bought one for Lindsay to compliment the frame set gift, and...5 for myself. They're good back-up gifts in case I forget anyone, but I'm only buying gifts for family this year, so that should be difficult in theory.

After the mall trip, we were pretty much done. We got back home at about 7AM, put our new mattress topper on our bed, and passed out. I woke up at about 12:30 and couldn't fall back asleep, so I hung around the house for a bit. At about 2:30 my curiosity got the better of me and I went back out to see the carnage in the stores we'd been in overnight. I figured we'd also forgotten some things too, so I wanted to go back when it was possible to browse. I started out in Walmart, and ended up grabbing another wax warmer. I'd plugged the first one in the bedroom while we napped, and it made the whole room smell like cookies, so I wanted one upstairs and one downstairs. I also got a couple of angry birds keychains for my mom, since she loves that game and it's sort of become a family joke. At a few stores overnight Clint had looked for Lego sets and said he'd wanted Legos. I had seen the Lego doorbuster at Walmart and didn't say anything because I didn't know he'd actually wanted it, so I went back to look for it when I was there. The place where they'd been had only the duplo legos, which is lame, so I wandered around the toy section. There ended up being one Lego set on the floor in a random aisle, so I grabbed that. Checkout didn't take nearly as long the second time, and I walked over to Lowe's to see if they had any sales on weed whackers or blowers so we could take care of the back yard. They didn't, but in the meantime I was texting Alana about shopping. She said she wanted an xbox, but didn't want to deal with the crowds. I told her she should have told me, that I would have picked her up one. I ended up going back to Best Buy, and although they didn't have the bundle with Halo and Fable 3, they had the plain 250GB xbox for $199, which is still $100 cheaper than normal. She wanted it, so I picked that up for her.

Petsmart didn't open until 6AM (gasp!) so I took that chance to head next door and see if there was anything great for the pets. XL dog beds were 50% off, and Sasha's has been a little ratty, so I got her a blue one with a cute paw print on the side. I went back to Old Navy after that and got another pair of jeans and a Gators long sleeve t-shirt. I went back to Target, too, and picked up 2 cheap sweaters to wear to clinics so I don't freeze on my next rotation. I was considering heading home at that point, but had brought the Kohl's circular with me, so I stopped by there. The real draw for me was a marshmallow gun. I looked for some more sweaters, but it was very picked through, and Kohl's is so disorganized, it's difficult for me to shop there for clothes when I'm tired. I looked in the men's section and found 2 shirts for my dad for Christmas, and was going to skip the marshmallow gun, until those shirts put me like $5 too short of the $50 limit to get $15 Kohl's cash. I went back and got the gun, not sure at that point whether I would give it to Clint, Will, or keep it for myself. I've decided since to save it for Clint for Christmas, and we can shoot marshmallows at Otis.

After Kohl's I was shopped out and hungry, so I got back home for good at about 6PM. I had something to eat, gave Clint his Legos as an early present, and we played with them for a bit before putting away all the crap we bought. Now just gotta wait for the vacuum and printer to ship!
