John loves his belly.
Before John, his stomach was something Rodney was slightly ashamed of, certainly nothing he would flaunt. In addition to his blazing genius, Rodney has a great many attractive qualities. He is, undoubtably, a very handsome man.
But, given the fact that he spends a great deal of time sitting in labs saving the city, the world, and various galaxies, not to mention pushing back the boundaries of modern science, he’s a little soft around the middle. If any extra weight could be carried proudly, it should be this weight, this stubborn lump of rounded flesh that is extremely resistant to exercise.
(He has a -small- fanciful notion that his belly is concerned Rodney’s going to get shipped off to Siberia or Antarctica again and is trying to protect his vital organs. His fat has excellent survival instincts.)
When they’re alone, John will reach for him, and one hand will invariably land on his belly, which John strokes with gentle fingers, pats affectionately, or pokes to make a point. If they’re just lying around, talking, Rodney’s shirt gets pushed aside before he realizes it and John pets his stomach with slow, smooth sweeps of his hand.
It’s as if Rodney’s belly is John’s chosen canvas of affection, and he claims it every night, almost immediately. Sometimes, he sleeps there, rubbing a stubbly cheek against Rodney's tender, ticklish skin and snuffling happily, one arm wrapped around Rodney’s hips.
Rodney touches John’s hair a lot, so he can see having favorite bits to latch onto, but his belly? Why would John choose the most unattractive part of Rodney’s body to snuggle? It baffles him.
He’s not going to ask about it, though, because John’s face goes soft when he touches Rodney there. And there’s a shy, secret smile thing going on that Rodney doesn’t want to ruin with stupid questions. Besides, the way John touches him makes Rodney feel oddly tender, and somehow safe, so really, not a problem. Just a puzzle.
