Small ficlet, Jess gets a phone call from Sean.
Jess angrily wiped the tears from her face; pulling her long blonde hair back in a ponytail. A bruise was already forming on the side of her face and she found herself reaching for her concealer for the 3rd time in two weeks
Her father was getting worse instead of better. He wasn‘t even apologising anymore and to make it worse she didn’t even have the distraction of Sean. She still didn’t understand why he had left so quickly. Sure they were no longer together but still.. Couldn’t he have cared enough to pick up the phone?
She felt more tears building inside of her, that she willed away. It was all getting too much. Her phone started ringing to the tune of “California” by Phantom Planet. She checked the caller ID. It was a private number and she answered hesitantly “Hello?”
“Jess? It’s me”
Her breathing stopped for just a second. Sean. “It’s been awhile” she managed to get out.
He winced inwardly from his end of the conversation. She sounded so hurt.
“I’m coming up, just wanted to you know, check in.. maybe hang out?”
A part of her was wanting to leap out of her chair and start choosing an outfit, the other part of her was tougher and less forgiving. “Maybe you should of thought of that before you dropped off the face of the earth.” she paused, and he started trying to defend himself “No Sean” she said interrupting him again. “Call someone who cares”
She hung up the phone and stared at her reflection in the mirror. Not all her bruises were visible.
