We arise early (recurring theme?) for our first day in Zadar for the sheer ability to leisurely enjoy our private room and bathroom IN a hostel. By 830 we are grabbing our INCLUDED breakfast of white bread, butter and marmalade and hot chocolate (that faintly reminded me of sour cream) and "caj," or tea that tasted more like lukewarm KOOLAID. Obviously, their nutriotionist on site was on vacation.
After the shoe/dryer incident of 08 we were too scared to go up and grba seconds, solely to be cheapasses. Fear of "more?" How increidibley un-American of us. Disgusted by this, we jointly make an effort to snag bread and Kool-aid sans yelling. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! Feeling confident we trek to Konzum aka Croatian grocery chain for food for the next two days. We end up "pulling a Joanna," or a Grandpa, by filling up an entire security locker (or newly deemed pantry) with fruit, nuts, carrots, crackers and muesli. Thankfully-no bread. From here, we embark on the 30-40 minute walk to the center. On our way we encounter a house with an impossibly large sphinx just sitting in the front yard, two young children sitting in a boat, and quite possible, the largest amount of sailboats and piers I've ever seen in my life.
Every turn is a pier, marina, or yacht club. We soon realize there isn't all that much to see and do in Zadar...if you don't actually own one. We decided thats truly whe nyou nkow you've lived in a city. When large "cities" like Zadar are cute and fun-but only for a few hours, maybe even a half day trip off a cruise ship but never ever for longer. We were so desperate we even contemplated going to see a three month old bad Hollywood movie. Thankfully, we chose otherwise. We wpent our time walking past Zadar's famous gates and frolicking on a hill reminiscent of A Midsummer Night's Dream. This one time, I also made a vegetarian eat a bunny. THe herbivore being Hannah, the bunny being chocolate (a rare post-Easter splurge).
A rare and favorite aspect of Zadar was its sea organ. Architecturally designed, these set of steps leading into the ocean play different musical notes depending on the angle, stregnth, size of the waves! I must say though, I expected a sea organ to be a bit more reminiscent of Davy Jones ( a la Pirates of the Carribbean and not the Monkees) rather than just steps. But all around tres interesting.
Zadar Day 2:
Lazy day following disastrous walk home on the previous day. Blistered and calloused, we gave our little feet a rest. Our bus to Pula wasn't until 1130 pm so wwe ever so slowly widdled away our time after 10 am checkout. It's only three and I'm writing this.
