Title: our bodies breathe to one regression
Notes: This is one third fanmix, one third plot building, one third fic. I... don't even know. But it was fun. Spoilers through Season 3! uh. the non-existent Season 3. no zip, but there is a youtube playlist and the one song unavailable on youtube I have a download link for.

songs compiled on a youtube playlist | "One Day I Floated Away" by Eisley (unavailable on youtube or almost anywhere else)

scarborough fair/canticle | simon & garfunkel | lyrics
opening credits
remember me to one who lives there / she once was a true love of mine
A song about fighting for something you've forgotten, and love, and Lethe.

days go by | lifehouse | lyrics
so come on and leave the years / when you watched the days go by / come on and leave the fears / that you were afraid to find
Mary & other revolutionaries, Season 1. Maybe they've spent their whole lives doing nothing that feels worthwhile and for everyone else but themselves, but things are going to change. Things have to change. They'll make things change.

hope on fire | vienna teng | lyrics
you're a one-man shift in the weather / you're the woman who just won't sell / climbing up and ringing the bell
Revolutionaries, Season 1. Something's changed in the air, and everyone can feel it. This is their time, they tell each other. Things are about to go right. Sometimes the air feels electric with hope. They are giddy with it, drunk on the promise of their freedom.

one girl revolution | saving jane | lyrics
I thought I told ya / I'm a soldier / and I'm not leaving til the battle's over / one girl revolution
Aimi & Saki, all the way through. They've got their guns and their muscles and their wiles and most importantly they've got each other. They've been called unhealthily dependent, and maybe it's true, but they don't really care.

fighter girl | mason jennings | lyrics
hey hey little fighter girl / it's you and me up against this whole wide world / sleeping together in the lion's den
Taylor/Jonah, all the way through. Maybe they aren't quite so reckless as the others, but they've got each other and Eli to remember. And when it comes down to it, they've got more grit than half of the rest, and more reason to survive.

wild child | enya | lyrics
ever feel alive / and you've nothing missing / you don't need a reason / let the day go on and on
John, Seasons 1-2. Sometimes James gets gloomy. John never understands that, because he thinks the world will never cease to be a beautiful place. This ship may be comparatively small, but John thinks anyone who has the resources, as James certainly does, should never be bored. John's never bored.

one day i floated away | eisley | lyrics
wake up in the morning, I shall / wake up and so shall you / and I wake up, the sun is beautiful
The whole cast, beginning of Season 2. They're alive. It seems amazing, but they're all alive and a compromise has been reached and things might even turn out to be okay, if they can fix the ship. It's a new day, and this time it's one they can all call their own.

drumming song | florence + the machine | lyrics
as I move my feet towards your body / I can hear this beat it fills my head up / and gets louder and louder
Mary/Lethe, late Season 1 through Season 3. Mary thinks that she has always been in love with Lethe, ever since she was young, maybe five, and her mother brought her with her to work. They had had the bulkheads open, and Mary could hear this sound in her head like the ship was singing to her. It's been singing ever since, but it's only now that she knows what it's saying. It's singing a love song to them all, and Mary's breath catches hard on the hammering of her heart.

antebellum | vienna teng | lyrics
I know the borderlines we drew between us / keep the weapons down / keep the wounded safe
Season 2, James/Liam and the tentative peace between the skilled and manual laborers. Liam thinks sometimes that James has no self-preservation instinct, because every day he crosses lines Liam takes for granted. Only three days after the stand down James wanders across the line of the mess hall that both sides have instinctively drawn and sits down across Liam, and then he takes the celery off of Liam's plate and adds it to his own. "I know you don't like it," is all the explanation he offers, and then he launches into a discussion of the new security details being drawn up, easily ignoring Liam's silence.

sink or swim | tyrone wells | lyrics
take a deep breath / no more time / this is what I thought I wanted / why am I afraid?
James, Season 2.  He knows nobody sees it, but the sudden burden on him is overwhelming. He knew how to lead revolutionaries, he knew how to make men like him, and he knew how to inspire them to great heights. But now he has to learn how to lead a ship, how to work with people he's spent a great deal of his life hating on principle, how to talk to people whose life he barely understands. There's so little time and so much work, and he doesn't know who to turn to. Why he ends up turning to Liam even he's not sure, because liking his looks hardly extends to him being a good confidante.

rabbit heart (raise it up) | florence + the machine | lyrics
here I am a rabbit hearted girl / frozen in the headlights / it seems I've made the final sacrifice
Lethe, Season 2 and 3. Maybe she's not real, maybe she is. She can hardly tell for herself. But the problem is she has these feelings. The ship made her too real, filled with emotions. The ship, herself. She made herself too real. There's irony in that, she thinks. There is nothing she wouldn't do for these people now. Her throat is raw and jagged and she is real, she knows she is, because she would give her life for them. Maybe she already has. She has trouble with the subtleties of expression and reality.

the captain & the hourglass | laura marling | lyrics
he's done with all this bullshit / he's heading back to war / if heaven is as heaven does / then this is hell for sure
James, Season 3. This is a fight he can win, he thinks. Power, pitch, roll, yaw. Bring the fight to the enemy. It's what he's always been good at doing.

us | regina spektor | lyrics
we're living in a den of thieves / rummaging for answers in the pages / we're living in a den of thieves / and it's contagious
Finley/Elizabeth, Season 3. They've waited a long time, and even now things feel strange between them. It's a little unreal, and a lot new, but if their children can get over the differences that divide them they certainly can. Elizabeth still doesn't regret taking her time to forgive him for the attempted assassination of James, though. She had thought she never would, but James mostly seems to find it amusing now, and she remembers what it had been like back then. Back then. Two years can seem like a lifetime sometimes.

run | snow patrol | lyrics
light up light up / as if you have a choice / even if you cannot hear my voice / I'll be right beside you, dear
James/Liam, Season 3. Liam wonders sometimes how James does it, because he watches him caught in the endless politics, watches him take three shifts at a time and stumble back to bed. Sometimes he sees James just standing there, looking lost and frightened, and he wonders if James even has a choice, if this is just his nature. To do everything, to be everything, to face every challenge head-on and bear as much of as he can. It's too much for any one person, but apparently nobody ever told James that.

cave in | owl city | lyrics
tie my handlebars to the stars so I stay on track / ... / then I'll take my leave and I won't even look back
Alfred, Season 3. He thinks I'll take off, I'll get away from here. There's a wide world and there's places to be. There are too many people he can't look in the face anymore, and the whole ship is stained with memory for him. Maybe for the others too. He can't tell anymore.

rescue me | hans zimmer (madagascar 2 soundtrack) | instrumental
ending credits
Hey, who knows. Maybe they'll even all make it out of this alive. Well, there's a laugh. Good one. Good joke.
