Except that really, most people did believe there wasn't. It wasn't that it didn't make sense, it's that there wasn't any evidence and surely if it was true there would be evidence by now. Surely they are alone in this universe because the thought of anything else is too grand for them, too hard.
It is hard to welcome the idea of things lurking in the dark waiting for you.
Still, Alfred thinks they should have all seen this coming. They went into deep space and they thought they could get away without anyone seeing them? What fools they'd been. And now they would pay for it, in blood and tears, because they had no words to share with these aliens that were not built from conquest and they were always going to be too scared to do anything but raise a gun and fire.
The aliens build a body from the Dauntless' dead and they put Alfred's brain in it. Life where there was only death, and he can't help but marvel at it even as he knows that this is the beginning of the end for them all. What hope do they have against this?
