I cannot contain my excitemeeeeeeeeent, it's just - I never really watch Pixar, because BOYS, SO MANY BOYS, and I have to really really love a movie to watch it these days when it's all about boys. And I hear all these fantastic things about Pixar, but I can't be bothered, and now they are doing a LADY, A BEAUTIFUL FIERCE LADY, and I am so hopefuuuuul.

On my brothers' suggestion I started reading Lois McMaster Bujold's work, so I just finished The Curse of Chalion, the first in one of her series, and it is basically a fantasy AU of Spanish history circa Queen Isabella, and it is GLORIOUS. Main character (of the first one, I hear it varies between books) is a dude, but THERE ARE ALL THE LADIES, AND THEY ARE AMAZING. So yes, books.
I'm especially pleased that it her face really isn't one I would call conventionally beautiful.
Yes! She is adorable and fierce and has amazing hair, but she's also short and round-faced and REAL. Of course real women can be conventionally beautiful, but it's so so nice to get such an obviously amazing heroine who is lovely in non-'gorgeous' ways.

It's really really awesome - and Iselle, that's the Isabella character, if you couldn't tell :D, is awesome. Bujold even slipped in the religious...fanaticism? nicely too - I'll be interested to see if that develops in the later books, bc in the first one it's much more a mode of showing the reader the different faiths of this fantasy land than a big plot point. But yeah, Iselle is one of my new favorite female fantasy characters.
I CANNOT WAIT.

Her backstory is in Young Avengers Special 01, which is Jess talking to all of them about why they became superheroes. It's a really good story, gives very good insight to all of them, and Kate's backstory is just. :( KATE. KATE I LOVE YOU.
