Ianto didn't typically take to wandering, but today staying still and by himself didn't appeal to him. He couldn't find anyone he knew on the main level of the compound, so took to exploring downward. It was all mostly uninteresting, until he made it to the third floor, and heard Jack's voice.
The 21st century is when everything changes.. He'd heard Jack say that, but never with a techno beat accompanying his voice. It sounded like ... well. He followed the sound, coming into the rec room just in time to see himself projected up on screen, looking nervous and fixing his tie. The door opened and there was music and basketball and Myfanwy screaming ... "Oh, God."
He hadn't yet notice who else was in the room, could only stare in horrid fascination as he went about his job, being ignored.
Numb is possibly the best word to describe the way that Gwen's feeling just now, her face pale in the flickering light of the projector and eyes rimmed red from crying. All of the work she's done since that night, all of that trying to forget, and it was absolutely worthless. Still she'd been standing in the street, gaping at Jack with blood on her hands. Still she'd killed and man, and oh, wasn't it the sickest kind of torture to have to sit back and watch it happen, to know it was coming and not be able to stop it
( ... )
Gwen's screams knocked him out of his shock, and he suppressed the instinct to do exactly as she told him and run back upstairs, forget this ever happened. But there was pain in Gwen's eyes and he knew it would be wrong of him to just leave her.
"Gwen. Gwen, I knew." He tried to sound relaxed, soothing, as he stepped forward and reached out to steady her, calm her, sit her back down on the sofa. "I knew about it, I just ... never saw."
That was a shock, perhaps as much as finding the reels in the first place, and when Ianto's words really sink in, Gwen can do little but gape at him, all the while as he's talking on screen.
When she finds her voice, it's accusatory, hurt. "You- you knew?! YOU KNEW ABOUT THIS?!"
He winced slightly at her tone, gaze breaking away from hers and travelling up to the screen. No, not the screen, somewhere on the floor.
"I found out on accident. Don't be cross, Gwen. I didn't think you'd ever find them. And how was I supposed to tell you?" The projector had gone quiet as he was leading Dr. Tanazaki about. It made him wince again. "I'm sorry."
