the italian socialist and her passenger make their way across the conservative dutch town in their foreign-made automobile while listening to modest mouse at a volume somewhere between whisper-level and not-so-hushed-tone. no, they don't really feel intimidated by their surroundings as one might think. on the contrary, they are quite confident in themselves. not quite self-righteous, but surely proud of who they are. now let these two members of humanity be introduced. lorna is the driver of the foreign-made automobile, and is driving her son, jonathan, to his first day of elementary school. why is this story told on this very day? because the first day of elementary school means it's the first day of kindergarten for jonathan, because this is a big step in any child's life, and also because soon the leaves on the trees will take in wondrous colour and fall to the ground. are you getting a visual yet? it's quite picturesque. anyway, this single-parent family lives in relative harmony within the community. and on a side note, yes, lorna likes modest mouse, because she is just hip like that. lorna is the kind of person that likes the smell of recently purchased computer mouse pads, the kind of person that wears mismatched socks on purpose, and the kind of person that gets excited beyond belief at the sight of ben and jerry's ice cream, especially chunky monkey. jonathan is quite young still, but he is the kind of child that will immediately break open a tootsie-pop and eat the center, and then continue to lick the candy shell from the inside out until it can melt in his mouth. he is the kind of child who will sit out on his play structure until the stars are visible in the sky beyond the clouds. then sometimes jonathan will see his mom inside looking lonely, so he'll rush in and join her on the newly-upolstered couch and they’ll read goodnight moon as the flames in the fireplace dance up against the chimney walls. if on any given night this family is looked back on, one might find the same thing. or maybe something totally different. this is just one example, one family, in a town of thousands.
