Character name: Hanatarou Yamada
Fandom: BLEACH
Timeline: Chapter 149 (Manga)
Age: Somewhere in the hundreds, never clearly stated
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Despite his clumsiness and timid nature, Hanatarou is the seventh seat in the fourth division, and is a remarkable healer. He is proficient in using kido to heal others, which is essentially concentrating spirit energy to use a number of helpful spells.

Despite his lack of involvement in most fights of any kind (except maybe running from them), it is revealed in an omake that Hanatarou does actually have a zanpakutou that he rarely keeps with him. It is called Hisagomaru, and actually garners energy from wounds Hanatarou heals. Then, when at full capacity, all the energy from the wounds are released (so supposedly the severity of Hanatarou’s attacks are related to the conditions healed) in a blast. However, after this, the sword becomes a scalpel… Something that would not be very useful in battle. Unless you intend to throw it in someone’s eye or use it for other clever, tactical purposes… Although Hanatarou’s tendency to often fall flat on his face indicates that he may not have very good aim.

The following point is speculation, but it is hinted at least in the BLEACH game Sokyoku Shards that Hanatarou has the ability to run very fast. That would make sense, as he is timid and avoids fights.

How would they use their abilities?: He would fall on his face all the time as he is very clumsy! And then cry and ask for help and apologize to the ground for soiling it with his presence.

But really, Hanatarou would probably run around the place attempting to heal people. He may even try to get a job at a the medical clinic- That is, if he can muster up the confidence to do so.

Appearance: Hanatarou's black, shoulder-length hair shrouds his pale, mousy face and uncertain blue eyes. He is exactly five feet tall, so he always is having to look up to others. Kon describes Hanatarou's look as "boring, but popular with the ladies." He tends to hunch over, as he often does not have much faith in what he is saying. He wears a black yukata, and socks underneath his sandals. He does not carry his zanpakuto around with him, and carries a medical kit with him instead.

Background: Hanatarou is a member of the fourth division in Soul Society. Each division is known for specific tasks they specialize in, and the fourth division specializes in medical care. It is for this reason that Hanatarou does not carry his zanpakuto, and often leaves it at home. Instead, he carries a satchel with medical supplies inside of it. Although they are looked down upon by other divisions for their lack of fighting abilities, the fourth division is important in times of crisis as they care for others who have been wounded in battle. During times of peace, however, the fourth division is assigned to “dirty work,” which involve a lot of cleaning. The members of this division are considered “weak” because they are not the most suitable for combat. Still, they are important, as many would be injured and decapitated without their abilities.

Hanatarou is first introduced to the story when he gets loses the rest of his division because he “had to tie his shoelaces.” (this is bizarre because he has no shoelaces to tie…. He wears sandals.) Ichigo and Ganjyu, discovered as outsiders, grab Hanatarou and hold a sword to his throat after being cornered by the eleventh division. However, their plan backfires as the eleventh division consists of the toughest fighters in Soul Society, and these people hate the members of the fourth division. Hanatarou is the one who explains this to Ichigo and Ganjyu.

In an unlikely turn of events, Hanatarou joins the two invaders as they are on a mission to rescue Rukia Kuchiki, a noble who has recently been imprisoned for sharing her powers with a human- Ichigo. Hanatarou has been assigned to clean the area of the prison Rukia stays in, and befriends her as he strikes conversation with her. He is amazed that she asks him to refer to her in familiar terms, instead of adding the suffix “-sama” to her name. She speaks to Hanatarou of her “crime” and describes Ichigo as a strong person, who has had his life changed by her actions. Hanatarou joins the two invaders because he reveals that he is aware of Rukia’s location, so they take him along. He also admits that he can identify Rukia from Ichigo’s descriptions and wishes for her freedom, despite knowing that helping invaders is considered treason. Hanatarou’s admiration for Rukia and belief in her good character caused him to risk imprisonment for her safety. Although Hanatarou is timid and frail, he does commit acts of his own sort of bravery.

Hanatarou forms a close bond with the two invaders as their journey progresses, but for different reasons. Ichigo’s strength and determination to save Rukia inspires Hanatarou to no longer be a passive person, and Hanatarou even begins to carry his zanpakuto with him after being involved with Ichigo. Hanatarou becomes more determined to take control of his own life after meeting with Ichigo. However, their relationship is not a one way street- After certain battles before the trio reaches Ichigo’s cell, Hanatarou does heal Ichigo. As for Ganjyu’s relationship with Hanatarou, Hanatarou is at first off-put by Ganjyu’s gruff and violent method of handling things. Ichigo protests that he is fine after waking to realize Hanatarou is healing him, but Ganjyu hits Ichigo and knocks him out to prevent him from overexerting himself. Ganjyu also prevents Hanatarou from interfering with Ichigo’s battles, as he helps Hanatarou realize that due to their lower levels of fighting capability, they are sometimes unable to be of use. The two steal a key to release Rukia, and even though Hanatarou mentions that he is relatively useless except for his ability to steal the key, Ganjyu reassures him. However, Ganjyu violently threatens Rukia as he realizes she has killed a member of his family. Hanatarou is appalled by this, but the characters are suddenly faced with a worse fact- They have been caught by the Captain of the 6th Division, Byakuya, who is also Rukia’s stone-hearted brother. Despite their relations, he does not overlook the fact that her actions have condemned her.

While Ganjyu refuses to give his life for someone who has killed his family member, Hanatarou shakily offers own life to save Rukia. He walks to confront Byakuya without even a sword, because he feels it would be wrong if he just left her at this moment, since he had decided to save her. Before this, he politely does thank Ganjyu and wishes him goodbye. Ganjyu thrusts Hanatarou aside to confront Byakuya, and although his motives are not explicitly revealed, it is most likely to protect Hanatarou as Ganjyu does not have much reason to protect Rukia. Ganjyu loses miserably, and Hanatarou is sentenced to prison because he has broken the rules.

He is freed, however, by a very similar looking and mousy Rikichi of Captain Renji’s 8th Division. Renji is a childhood friend of Rukia’s, and Rikichi releases Hanatarou to heal Renji. Hanatarou does do Renji this favor, but requests that Renji save Rukia- Which he agrees to do.

This is the point from canon that Hanatarou is being picked up.

Personality: Hanatarou is… Is like what Ganju and Ichigo claim his name indicates- Not very easy to remember. He doesn’t seem to stand out at all as a person, and even Kon claims that his appearance is very boring, though also notes that it seemingly is one popular with the girls. Where Kon gets the second idea, we really have no clue (it might be poking fun at Hanatarou’s enthusiastic fanbase. Hanatarou’s average haircut, tiny height of 4’9” and habit of looking up at people does not do very well for his self esteem. Easily alarmed and hurt, if Hanatarou was a box, he would be labeled “fragile.” Hanatarou even refers to himself as “the frequently bullied Yamada Hanatarou.”

Hanatarou is also incredibly gullible, as can be seen when someone pranks him and gives him a pill that supposedly leaves him “bursting with energy.” Although he believes it works it does no good for him, really. It is only flour. Also, having his birthday on the first of April is probably the worst thing ever because he’s always pranked the most on a day that should be very happy.

Hanatarou's loyalty and dedication to his friends is one of his key character traits- Although Hanatarou and others may claim that he is weak, clumsy, and prone to causing accidents (the last two are very true), he proves to be a very strong character for someone of his abilities. Although Hanatarou possesses nowhere near the strength of characters that he admires (Rukia, Ichigo, and even Ganjyu), he goes to great lengths for his own self to defend them. Putting himself in between Byakuya and his friends, knowing that he would not stand a chance, Hanatarou attempts to defend the people he has come to admire.

Hanatarou's admiration for others reveals noteworthy character traits about himself. Assigned to cleaning Rukia's jail cell, Hanatarou is awed that a noble would even speak to him without using derisive tones and is even more surprised that she lets him address her by her first name. His reaction to Rukia's kindness illustrates how low his self-esteem is, and how unworthy he deems himself in relationship with others. Hanatarou views himself at the bottom of the food chain, and believes that he is of little value in relation to others. However, his dedication to Rukia and willingness to put himself in the worst of danger just so that she can be rescued (committing one of the highest offenses possible by betraying Soul Society and later being thrown in jail for it) does show that Hanatarou is brave in his own right- and fiercely loyal to those who are kind to him.

Though easily overwhelmed, Hanatarou approaches everything with a sort of childlike wonder and often lets things slip out before thinking too hard about what he is saying. Hanatarou never intentionally means to be rude.

Another thing to be noted about Hanatarou is his dedication to helping others- Whether they know him or not. Hanatarou is willing to heal the wounds of any who need his help, and after he is freed from prison by Rikichi, risks running away to heal Renji.

Have you read up on how the game works?: Yes!

1st person sample:
[A loud, high-pitched squeal can be heard over the communicator.]

Gyuh, owowowow... U-um... A-ah, my shoe is stuck underneath that rock, a-ah, it really, ouchoucouch, hurts... Oh! That thing is on! A-ahem!

Hello? Are there people on the other side? Um! Other side people, aha, I d-didn't mean to call you that... Ah! I think there's been a mistake- I-I'm Yamada Hanatarou! From the Fourth Division, from Soul Society! And, I think I've gotten lost! So if anyone could direct me home, I would be very happy! Thank you very much...

[Pause. He can't hear anything. The message he gets then finally hits him.]

W-what?! I can't go back home? But, Renji-san! He's in trouble, and he's-

There's something I really need to do right now! I really need to get back home!

And, now that I t-t-think about it, eeeeek! This is actually really scary! Somebodypleasehelpmegetbackhome! Ichigo-san? Ganju-san? Rukia-saaaaan!

3rd person sample:
Hanatarou always had an affinity for flowers- Not necessarily because of his name, but because they were so beautiful, but so fragile. They couldn't scream when you stepped on them, or anything like that, and they really didn't have much to defend themselves. Well, roses had thorns, but... That was beside the point.

Flowers couldn't say you were weak, either. They couldn't tell you that you were a coward- They didn't insult you, they just looked up at you, being beautiful, and pointed towards the sky.

Hanatarou felt droplets of rain fall on his back, and looked up at the sky with the wonder of a little boy, "Oh! It's raining! How pretty... Oh, oh no! The flowers!"

He pulled the edge of his sleeve so that he could stretch it over the flowers, sheltering them from the rain, but then stopped, and laughed nervously at himself.

"Ahaha, I almost forgot... The rain is good for you, isn't it? It's silly of me to shield you from something you need. You need rain to grow up to be stronger! But," Hanatarou knelt down, whispering to the flowers as if they were friends. In his mind, they inched closer, to hear the "secret" that he uttered, "I think you're strong and beautiful the way you are. I don't think you really need to change."
