Fanfic: Amsterdam 1/?

Well I'm trying to write some fanfic again - here is part one of an Avengers (movie) piece I am working on.

Title: Amsterdam
Author: timekpr
Fandom: Avengers (Movie Verse)
Pairing: hints of Clint/Natasha
Rating: PG-13
Chapter: 1/?
Summary: When Hawkeye meets the Black Widow, can Natasha survive long enough to meet Clint. A first meeting scene

It's been a long three weeks. Nineteen days setting up the maze of welded-shut doors, damaged fire escapes and timely distractions to funnel the Black Widow right to his kill zone. Two endless nights perched on a godforsaken gravel rooftop waiting for Hill to signal the start of the run. He knows he's got no right to complain - Hill's been undercover on this objective almost a year, Coulson probably longer than that.

SHIELD could have taken the Widow out before now - hell, he could have done it right through the window of the Amsterdam cafe she dined in three nights ago. But this whole setup is less about removing the Black Widow than it is about seeing that the wrong people get blamed when she's found floating in the canal come daybreak. Making sure that her blood is found in the right place by someone who'll draw all the wrong conclusions. Clint's never asked who's going to take the fall for his op, and knows telling him the larger picture never occurred to Coulson.

His whole vision narrows down to the kill box, a surprisingly clean dead end alley backed with a freshly whitewashed wall, empty save for a bright green dumpster decorated with a smiling cartoon character and bright white letters that likely spell out Reduce, Reuse, Recycle if you can read Dutch. Three hours of painstaking adjustment of the decorative architectural lights just below his perch has eliminated any concealment below while creating a blind above with walled with impenetrable darkness. Even the refuse bin has been customized, lowered flat to the ground and welded shut, now providing only a stage for his target's final entrance.

Once an hour Coulson's voice in his earpiece breaks the spell, calling for check-in. Hill's mic keys up first giving them all a precisely two-second snatch of music from the party. Second is the Agents two streets over in one of the ridiculously red and blue striped local police vehicles confirming the zebra in position. He reports third with three soft clicks from the back of his throat, a sound that blends in with the nighttime city. Four is the remote monitor who might be in the very building beneath his feet or at 54,000 on the 'carrier. Five is the extraction team with a simple “ready, sir”. He knows there is a sixth team somewhere out there, for cleanup, but they aren't on his channel. Cleaners never have contact with wetworks - no matter how badly it all goes to hell they'll never give up the operative responsible.

All he knew about Amsterdam before the mission was that they had legal pot and world-famous tulips. Neither of which he can properly appreciate from his roof. He lets the parts of his mind that aren't his hands on the bow wander as he waits. He plays a game with himself each time Hill checks in to identify the background music and wonders why a pre-auction reception hosted by a top-level international weapon smuggler has a string quartet playing Hayden and Beethoven. He tries to picture Agent Hill in a designer evening gown mixing with Libyan-financed terrorists and buyers for the Sierra Leone rebels while plotting to kill the mass-murdering bidder from Burundi with her cocktail napkin and a drink umbrella.

Like every good mission there's no gradual transition from epic boredom to holy fuck. His earpiece fills with a feminine scream and a panicked sounding Hill shouting “He's bleeding, help! We have to get out of here!”

He starts the count in his head as the comm goes suddenly quiet - remote switching him to a private channel where his only link to SHIELD is Coulson's steady voice calling the op, “Target in motion, eta 2 minutes.”

Less than two minutes later, 98 on his count, he sees the first flash of red enter the alley below.
