It hurts Kakashi’s head to think about it.
Even though He should tell him, it’s scary.
Scary that He could care that much about someone.
He’s scared that Iruka will die like everyone else has.
Scared that He just won’t be good enough for him.
Iruka is brave. He embraced a child that he should have despised, and fights for what He believes in.
Kakashi’s a coward. He hides from memories and pain. Hell, he hides from his own face.
It’s not that Kakashi’s afraid of Iruka. No, no, far from it. He was very in love with Iruka.
In fact, if Iruka wasn’t as naïve as he was, He would have figured out that a long time ago. Kakashi was acting like a seven year old in love, for Christ’s sake!

That the teasing was because he didn’t know how to react to the butterflies in his stomach?
That the messy reports were made so that He could come back and redo them in front of the teacher?
That the constant staring was not because Iruka had something on him?
That maybe, just maybe, those sake nights were meant to invoke something more?
