Every time when they came to a new world it was difficult to adjust to the change. Everything was different: people, technology and the state the world was in. There could be either war or peace. A hidden conflict leading to a tense atmosphere or just a strict social order, you never knew.
Arriving somewhere new was a wild card.
And it seemed like they had always drawn a joker before.
Most countries had an own rhythm in which things were done with which they had to become acquainted with first. Traditions and customs were the tune and the people the instruments forming the song of the particular world. As additional instruments, they needed to catch on the melody. Normally a few days did the trick. The five of them just settled in somewhere and went with the flow as much as possible.
Now was different. One instrument had been exchanged for another, and even though of the same kind it threw their synchronisation of board. Additionally, Fai felt like each of them played a new role now. Old duets had been scattered. A new order had yet to be found.
The new tune would be different, that much was sure.
Fai would make it different.
For things to be right again.
A week passed and he felt still on the edge, noticed the others being tense as well. No one could forget the passed events. What had happened in Tokyo was one thing, but the next world was another matter entirely. This time, it was them attacking, stealing, hurting.
Especially Sakura could not stand it, nor put it behind her. Her bad conscience was obvious in every smile that was missing. She had once been a very happy person.
Yet Sakura needed to continue her path, Fai knew. That was why he felt the urge to support her with all he had.
Fai was sensible to all of her pains for he felt similar.
Only that he could help Sakura. With his own pains there was no helping.
That was his main reason to enlist for that dangerous chess tournament. He was sure the others felt alike.
Taking action now was good. It helped them to return to some of their old synchrony. They were moving, effectively fighting something. Even if they couldn’t confront the right enemy, at least they fought for a good cause.
They were paying off a dept to themselves and it took the strain of the mood every time they were on the field. Fai had seldom felt an urge to fight, but this, where all of them somehow fitted again, was better than when they were off the battleground. Fai smiled bitterly.
Times changed so fast.
He seated himself next to Sakura on the cushion sofa. They were in the spacious living room that was filled with a set of matching Victorian styled furniture. There were huge windows facing southwards and even fresh flowers every day. Still, they were not able to fill the room with life how they had managed to do so easily before. Yet he figured they had to live with it somehow, everyone for themselves but all of them together, still connected. Much more than how Fai could ever admit to himself.
And somewhere, buried deep down he knew that very well.
Kurogane was the first to speak. “So this was a game of chess. Pretty lively for a board game.” Mokona was fast to catch on. “This version is very different from when I was playing with Yuuko and the other Mokona. So fast, Mokona had hardly and time to cheer you on. “
“It is very tiresome” Sakura replied. She lifted her gaze to where Shaolan stood, but not quite. “We won today, but tomorrows enemies could be ways stronger.”
“This first round is probably just for warming up, the really powerful players we will see only later” said Shaolan. Kurogane only snorted in reply.
“I agree with you Shaolan, from one weak enemy we mustn’t underestimate the rest. There is plenty to come.” Fai added.
“Mokona will rehearsal and do her best cheering you on in the next round. If we all do our best, we will surely win!”
Sakura abruptly stood up. “We will win this tournament. I am going to sleep so I will be fit for the next round.”
“Mokona will be keeping you company tonight! Don’t worry too much Sakura-Chan, it will all turn out all right.”
And with a last, quick glance in Shaolans direction they left the room.
Shaolan excused himself a few minutes later, exhaustion clearly visible in his face.
“So it is only us adults left” Fai said into the silence.
“The small ones are tired out. This game takes all of them.” came the answer.
“It is a hard game. You are expected to strike ruthless and fast. No wonder they feel the tension.”
Kurogane shot him a glance. “Are you okay? You have not eaten since -.” He was cutting his wrist on his sword while he spoke, drawing blood.
Seeing the crimson blood had a strange effect on Fai. He had not really felt particularly >hungry< before, but upon watching the dark red liquid running down Kuroganes wrist, he felt agitated, excited even. He wanted to taste, fill his mouth with the fluid and drink.
Fai wanted that blood.
Yet at the same time he was disgusted by himself. This was blood, after all. Blood leaking from the wound of a human, from Kurogane. How could he ever drink from those wounds?
Nevertheless Fai knew that one day he would drink it. This day had just not yet come.
Suddenly angry, he exiled the room muttering “Keep it” under his breath.
Kurogane sighted and covered the wound with his left hand. He had hoped this whole business would be easier. Truth to be told, he was unsure about how to proceed. Kurogane knew that if Fai was to drink, he would have to be the one offering. The mage would never ask for blood when he felt hungry. The problem was, Kurogane did not know how often vampires needed food. Once a week? Twice? Or just once a month?
There was no one he could ask, and Fai would surely not tell him when.
Resulting in Kurogane feeling the way he felt now: terribly helpless. Fight he could, but a task such as this needed sensibility. For this he was clearly not made. Save that there was no one other. Within their group of five, everyone was upset enough on their own, and Kurogane doubted the others knew. He could of course ask the mutated mochi to ask the witch for help, but somehow Kurogane disapproved of that solution. Mot counting that he would have to have something to exchange for the information, he felt like this was something Fai and he better found out amongst themselves. If he ever wanted to understand the mage, they would have to arrange with things.
That still did not help with the present situation. Kurogane simply did not know how to approach the other. He was not the character suited to hold the group together, and he very well knew that.
As a result he offered and waited. And hoped that maybe he could keep some things together after all.
