Uh, kinda depends on the machine, but usually you just put clothes in, measure out a moderate amount of detergent to put on top of the clothes, select the water temp, set the time, and start it.

Not. Really? I think only really strong industrial chemicals do that.

Most detergent doesn't even leave a red mark if you wash it off quickly enough.
