justprompts The Luckiest

(I should mention this is the same day of the courtroom drama.)

"And in a wide sea of eyes/I see one pair that I recognize/And I know/That I am/I am/I am/The luckiest/I love you more than I have ever found a way to say to you" ~ Ben Folds

Jay was walking. Just walking. She wasn't sure where she was going, but she needed to walk. Her hand were shoved in the pockets of her jeans and she watched her feet. She'd declined her mother's offer of spending the night at her place. She loved her mom, of course, but she wanted to avoid. She couldn't avoid around her mother.

Without realizing it, she had wandered towards Lucy's side of town. Maybe it was auto pilot, maybe it was a desperation inside her of needing someone. She didn't even clue in to where she was until she heard a loud shout.

"Earth to Jay!"

Jay blinked and looked up. Lucy was standing down the sidewalk several feet with her arms crossed and head tilted. Jay looked around the neighborhood and came to a stop in front of her friend. "Hi," she said softly.

"I've been calling your name for like...a minute."

"Sorry," Jay shrugged.

"I tried calling your cell earlier."

"I know," she nodded slowly.

"I was worried."

"I know," Jay repeated.

The women stood across from one another outside of Lucy's building. Jay's hands moved from her pockets and her arms went around her chest as she looked at Lucy. Lucy stepped forward and brushed Jay's hair behind her ear. "How are you, honey?"

"Fine. I'm fine," Jay nodded. Her teeth clamped down over her bottom lip.

"No you're not," Lucy argued. She continued stroking Jay's hair gently. Ever since they were kids, Lucy had naturally taken the older sister role. The gap of years between their age meaning nothing otherwise. Jay sighed. Lucy moved her hand down Jay's arm and took her hand. "Come on. Come inside."

"I should get home," Jay shook her head. "I'm...I have plans tonight. I need to get ready."

"No. Come inside."

Jay shook her head. "I don't..I don't want to be around the kids like this."

"Okay. So let me go tell my old lug I'm taking you home." Lucy gave Jay a small smile and Jay couldn't help but return it. She nodded.

"Okay." She stood there, in the way of passerby's, as she waited for Lucy to return. When she did, Lucy wrapped an arm around Jay's waist and led her down the sidewalk.

"You know I love you, right?" Lucy bumped Jay's hip.

"I know," Jay whispered.
