“You can clutch the past so tightly to your chest that it leaves your arms too full to embrace the present.” - Jan Glidewell
Jay was sitting up on the hospital bed. She was worn, dirty, and tired. She wanted to shower. Take a nap. Just leave the hospital. Everything had been a blur from Flack pulling her from the building on.
Danny hadn't left her side. She wasn't so sure what she'd do with herself if he had. Having him near her was the only thing keeping her in one piece. He stood by the bed and held her hand tightly as Flack went through standard questioning. Jay answered the best she could, sighing and rubbing her eyes.
Flack sighed. "Alright...I think the rest can wait til tomorrow." He flipped his notebook shut.
"Thanks," Danny said softly with a nod. Flack nodded back to him.
A nurse popped her head in the door. "Your mother would like to come in before the detectives leave, if that's alright."
Jay took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Danny had stayed to the side quietly when Ada had grabbed Jay up in her arms once they arrived at the hospital. It had taken a long time for Jay to assure her mother she was okay before Ada would let the doctors take her to look her over. Jay glanced to the nurse and nodded. "Yea, it's fine with me."
Flack nodded. "We're done here."
As the nurse retreated, Jay looked to the floor. "I'm apoligizin' ahead of time," she muttered. Flack glanced to Danny for clarification, but Danny just shook his head.
Ada came through the door slowly and glanced around the room. She waited until the nurse had shut them all in the room before stepping up to Flack and looking up at him. Flack swallowed. She was small, but...intimidating.
"You're the man who saved my girl?" Ada asked softly.
"I guess so." Flack cleared his throat and extended his hand. "Detective Don Flack, ma'am."
Ada looked down at his hand, staring. Jay started to get worried what her mother would say to her friend, but Ada didn't speak for the moment. She only moved forward again and wrapped her arms around Flack. She hugged him tightly while he stood stiffly, glancing Danny's way. Jay's brows raised at this. Flack awkwardly reached out and patted the woman's back. It was one thing to have a stranger thanking him for saving their daughter, but this was a little different.
"Thank you," Ada whispered.
Flack glanced Danny's way again. Danny was smirking. "Just go with it," he mouthed to his friend. Flack gave Danny a mild glare.
"You're welcome," he said to Jay's mother. "Danny woulda skinned me alive if I hadn't."
At this, Ada let go of Flack and looked over at Danny. He had lost his smirk and stood tall, watching her back. He gave the slightest of nods to her. Ada looked over at Jay. "I take it you never ended things?"
"No, Ma," Jay said softly.
"Look, I don't wanna cause trouble," Danny said slowly. He held his hands up, ready to ease out the door.
"No. Stay," Ada said. He obeyed. "You care about my daughter?"
"Ma," Jay objected.
"Do you?" Ada ignored Jay.
Danny sighed and nodded. "Yeah, I do."
Ada nodded, taking a deep breath and pulling herself to stand tall. "I don't know that this isn't your fault," she said softly. "But thank you." Danny shrugged, unsure what to say. Ada looked over at her daughter for awhile, then turned back to Danny. "You both better keep taking care of her," she said. Then she stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Danny, too. "Thank you," she said again.
"I will," he nodded. "I promise." He sighed and glanced up at Jay. She just looked kinda shocked. He glanced over at Flack.
"Just go with it," Flack was mouthing to him.
