If I may be forgiven for quoting myself...this is the sort of thing I was referring to when I had a character observe in my short play Staring Contest, or The Enemy in Orange that the reason we use the word report to describe both a news item and a rifle firing is that the media is something we no longer listen to or absorb. Rather, it's something we're assaulted by.
