narrow stairs

so the album isn't due out for another month, but I've already heard two singles (I will possess your heart and Cath) and here's my thoughts

it's like death cab is trying to go back to an older sound, but approaching it in a different way... they've matured from the sounds of 'you can play these songs with chords' and 'something about airplanes'... maybe they found that they started sounding too similar? plans tried to break out of that mold though, and it didn't quite work I think. there are very few songs on there that I'll listen to over and over again... others are catchy and sure that's good too, but not MEMORABLE. a lot of the songs revolve around love lost, which gets tired as a theme very quickly.

the song 'fake frowns' is sort of how the two new singles sound like... faster, a bit more lighthearted but with a sadder theme once you get down to actually listening to the song. and it's like, wtf okay you've already done this before, and yeah all these songs are catchy but not intense like anything from transatlanticism (and yes you did spell it right kseny haha)

the new singles do show growth, because they ARE better executed than a lot of the songs from 'SAP' and 'YCPTSWC' and I'd rather listen to them on a regular basis (this is just a generalization: one of my favourite songs is from SAP) than songs from those albums.

oh well. I hope the rest of the album fares better. I want something to strike me, deeply. not a glancing, shallow blow like what I'm hearing now.

note: I'm not saying I dislike 'I will possess your heart' or 'cath'. on the contrary, I've listened to them tons because it's just refreshing to hear something new, but I want to hear something lasting. I doubt the CD will be their best (transatlanticism and we have the facts and we're voting yes take that honour) but I expect it to have something impressionable :)

EDIT: I am currently obsessed with Cath. I'm just listening to it over and over, and I did the same with I will possess your heart, but this song... it speaks more to me. with the fear of dying alone so great that you'll choose anyone, and it's not anyone's fault but your own and you know by doing this you're giving up all hope, but it's better than the alternative of being single... forever. and how ultimately, many people make that choice when they've become that hopeless. it's so sad, and beautiful and powerful... especially the strong chords right after 'on so many men who could have loved you more'. wow.
