All of Time and Space…and you can’t see why it’s dangerous to bring a Black woman back in time

Alright here's another rant that is an extension of The Shakespeare Code and also Human Nature Family of Blood and Season 3 in general of Doctor Who: Blacks and time travel. Here you have a 900 year old Time Lord whose business it is to see and travel around all of Time and Space... yet still can't see why it's dangerous to bring a Black Woman back ( Read more... )

Preach girl Preach. And I love your fanfiction excerpt because that's how it probably would have gone down if you or i went back in time right now

"How DARE The Doctor ask Martha to accept drudgery, the mental, emotional, and spiritual abuse of class prejudice and racial intolerance...How dare he choose absolute freedom and comfort for himself and labor and danger for HIS companion, simply because he does not want to kill this family" Preach IT GIRL. That is what was so unacceptable that the writers new there was precedence through the book that she could be made into his niece but no he inherited her not as a niece but as a SERVANT Ugh Thanks for commenting

She could have been his ward. And I know, it is far too easy to come up with these ideas in hindsight, but sorry, Martha in 1913 as a maid, or Rosita as a prostitute suggest that the writers did not reseach the era or even consider giving young Brits a peek into lives of exceptional Brits of color. This new crop of writers seem afraid of lables like Politically correct, or diversity agenda, -or they're just don't want to do the research, which is interesting because I got a lot of this information from the BBC site. So: Martha becomes a maid; Rosita is a prostitute. Velile Tshabalala, who is simply gorgeous in Eragon, says that RTD downplay Rosita's profession in the script for the "kids". (Paraphrased) If a prostitute as a herione on a kids show has to "suggested" to Protect the kids, why create a character like this. Why not allow lovely Velie to protray Queen Victoria's ward: Sarah Bonetta Forbes? http://images.npg.org.uk/264_325/5/3/mw66053.jpg... )

I forgot Rosita was a prostitute! I was too distracted by her horrid wig. I didn't like how at the end of the special the would be Doctor decides to employ Rosita as a nanny for his son. I thought that was another race fail.

I can imagine RTD selling the role to his actor, saying that Don Quixote was the inspiration for Lake, therefore, like Dulcinea, Rosita is a prostitute. No one going to turn down a role in Man of La Mancha because the lead female is a prostitute. But, the problem still remains that Rosita is the Only woman of color, (besides a child) YOUNG viewers see in the time period.

By the way, according to teasers, Eleven's companion Amy Pond is working for a strip-o-gram, thus the the thigh high police woman's outfit. Maybe she's working her way through college.

I never thought of it that way, but you are totally right! Ten always treated Martha like his errand girl. Even in the episode with the weeping angels, we find out that during those months when they were trapped in the 60's, Martha had to work in a shop. But then, the choice of time period and place was not the Doctor's choosing. I always wondered why they had to choose that era and place to hide in? Even if they wanted England during that time, they could have chosen Brighton or some area of England where IR families were more common place of where POC were in greater numbers. But, then that would mean the writers would actually have to be creative and give some thought to their characters. At least in the Shakespeare code they thought enough to have Martha worried about such things and in the Family of Blood they did not completely overlook race and have Martha's time their be idyllic (other than the back breaking labor and class system ( ... )

Is Martha unsuitable partner for time travel or is the Doctor Racist? viomisehunt March 25 2010, 18:35:03 UTC
But does this sequence show Martha as unsuited for time travel because she is a woman of color, (which is a statement that is beyond racist and insupportable) or does it show that that John Smith/the Doctor is a racist ( ... )

That's why I love fanfiction. I've read a few really good 1969 fics that address the issue the Doctor and Martha would have had living together in England. They also address the problem of Martha having to work to support the Doctor.

In what movie/show did Charlton Heston have a black love interest?

Ooh me too. Persiflage has great fanfiction that shows more historical relavence and actually deals with the racism that they would have actually faced in 1969. P.S. Icon love from a fellow spock/uhura shipper

Actually, Rose was a dinner-lady for a couple of weeks, but your point still stands. Why couldn't he introduce her as an adopted ward? *sigh*

Thanks for that. And yes, thank you I think the point is still valid because the Doctor is aware Rose was 'undercover'. They are working together ( ... )
