My thoughts on Mickey and Martha

Feb 22, 2010 02:04

I whole heartedly acknowledge that the whole Martha/Mickey pairing in "The End of Time" was extremely rushed and last minute. However, I actually got up and screamed in elation when I saw them together. Yes it really was last minute that RTD pushed the two black characters together, but in a sad twist of irony he actually got it right. Because these two black characters were the most ignored, derided, and underappreciated characters/companions in the history of Who and furthermore, were ignored by the White characters that were supposed to care about them. What does that tell young children.

So yeah I guess you could say “they just put them together cuz they’re black” but I for one was content. While I applaud the UK for showing interracial relationships, it was great to see black love on sci-fi television for a change and two strong black characters saving the Earth. Uh Hell Yes! (I personally find it ironic that Freema Ageyman’s co-star, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, is paired with a black man in “The Undercovers” portraying a husband and wife spy team). I, personally, am glad that Martha finally got a real tangible relationship instead of imagined off-screen guy that no one ever sees. They have both been instrumental in saving the world and are fierce, assertive, and awesome. What a tangible match after what they have gone through (and I say this as a devoted Ten/Martha who only gets validation in fan fics).

And so, it is with bitter irony that I support Mickey and Martha, the companions who had to turn to each other to get some recognition and love.

Your thoughts?

*In preparation and holding over for Series 5 of Doctor Who (and also converting my friends to DW), I have taken to watching and blogging my own reviews about Series 3 (the best one so far obviously ;D) especially with the racial tinge hanging over it. This one of a series of Rants and Observations on Doctor Who*

race, doctor who, rant
