I also read the speech, because I don't think I could have made myself listen to it without either tuning out or smashing something in reaction of the internal screaming that happens when that many brain cells all commit suicide at once, and I am actually happy to see that my interpretation must not have been too far off. You actually noted some of the exact things that stood out, in my mind.

I did find myself wondering if he (along with his speechwriters) actually thinks he's good at the "subtle" manipulation apparently being attempted in some of those comments. To me, it screamed of Foreshadowing that would have been marked off as "Too Blatant" in any fiction writing class I've ever had.

As he listed off the "other half", the examples of those without Democracy, I found myself imagining him reading off a checklist, with little bullseyes doodled along the margins.

The page I was reading made the Zombie impressions even stronger, because of the little [APPLAUSE] inserts along the way. It gave this impression of a puppet audience neatly clapping on cue. It is really a good thing I was reading this and not trying to watch or listen to it.

When he made the dig at criticism, I have to admit I nearly stopped reading. It was just too much. I pushed on, though. I'm twisted like that.
