In the heart of the madding crowd

Aug 07, 2005 00:40

Great Caesar's ghost, what a process!  I'm talking about the embarkation process for the ferry.  It's basically a mad rush for the boat once they've finished unloading it.  Or rather, a series of mad rushes, as they let through maybe 100-150 people at a time.  I was in rush number 2.

I'm up on the life vest deck at the top of the boat, where I am sheltered on thee sides and have a roof.  [I will be avoiding contractoins henceforth, as the apostrophe key somehow brings up the Find function and is quite annoying.  Please bear with me.]  I got here early, thanks to my lack of wheeled luggage, so I was able to move more nimbly through the crowd.  I am actually lying on top of one of the life vest lockers.

I guess I cannot come up with a better system for getting passengers on the boat if the ferry company is going to allow 1st come 1st served seating for those without cabins.  Especially when there is only one entrance to the boat in use (the aft).  This deck has filled up right quick.  I am glad I got here early.

Although it is 00:45 and the scheduled departure was 23:30, we have not left yet.  Cars are still being driven into the boat.  I think unloading the cars and tractor trailers (!) took longer than normal, or the boat may have arrived late, so we only started boarding at 23:30.
