We decided to have a family movie night on Saturday after dinner. So I go to Netflix and see which family movies are available for streaming. I stumble onto the 1994 remake of "Black Beauty". It's a G-rated movie about a horse. Seems safe enough.
Turned out that in this country, a G-rated movie can show horses being born and dying. This wouldn't have been so bad, except that Emma started asking what happens to the horse after it dies. Stories about how happy the horse will be in Horse Heaven didn't do much to calm her down. From there, it was a natural transition to "What will happen to me when I die?" and "I don't want to die when I'm old!"
And that's how family movie night turned into a life lesson.
