Chapter Nine
Ennis drove carefully, though he was sure that none of the 3 beers he'd had several hours ago was still affecting him.
It was a beautiful night for driving slowly. Jack was being uncharacteristically quiet but Ennis knew it was because Jack was embarrassed, not because he was drunk and trying to hide it, as he sometimes did.
Ennis didn't mind the quiet. He actually preferred it on nights like this. Though the interstate was surely the fastest way to get back home, Ennis preferred the parallel roads. That way he could keep company with the trees and glance at the beautiful houses, imagining happy families behind each door and homes filled with laughter. Hadn't been a lot of laughter in his house growing up.
His parents had loved him, of course, but they were very serious people.
Anyway, on nights like this, he could even see the moon. And tonight it was full! Comforting and soothing like a warm hug or his grandma's chamomile tea. Ennis glanced over at Jack. Was he staring at the moon as well?
Jack didn't need to be so embarrassed just for wanting to kiss him. He knew Jack was often curious about trying new things, but usually wanted Ennis along for the ride because it made him feel more safe. They had both started drinking together when they were 15. They'd tried Thai food together. Even scuba duving.
Why would it be any different when Jack decided to try kissing a guy? Ennis chuckled silently. But maybe Jack hadn't expected to like it so much.
Ennis shrugged. It was no big deal.
Jack didn't know this, but when they were in college, there was a guy in one of Ennis's classes who he'd known had a crush on him. Ennis had been thinking about what a nice guy Bill was and got kind of curious about what it would be like to kiss him. So,ever adventurous, he'd headed over there to Bill's dorm room one night around 10:30 after Jack had fallen asleep studying on the sofa.
Ennis laughed inwardly, remembering the surprised look on Bill's face when he opened the door and saw Ennis standing there.
"How'd you know where I live?"
"You write it at the top of all your notes in class. I guess in case you lose them?"
"Oh yeah. ... Well, come on in ... "
Ennis cleared his throat. "Bill, I know this is gonna sound strange. But ... well, I know you kinda have a crush on me ..."
Bill blushed.
"And ... well, I've never kissed a guy before and I'm kinda wondering what it would feel like."
Ennis saw a flash of heat in Bill's eyes but it was followed by confusion. "But ... you're not gay!" he said.
Bill's eyes widened as Ennis stepped forward, planted a hand on either side of Bill's face and began nibbling at his lips. "I'm a good kisser, though!" Responding immediately, Bill kiss-walked Ennis backwards until his back hit the door, reaching around Ennis to lock it, and then leaning his body into Ennis as he grabbed the back of Ennis's head with both hands.
Just as Ennis was noticing that two boys kiss harder than a boy and a girl, he realized that Bill was hard against him, and he got hard, as well.
He wondered what grinding would be like with boy parts and decided to find out. Grabbing Bill's ass with both hands, he pressed him in while rocking against Bill slowly and rhythmically, both of them groaning in a delicious duet until they both came.
"Damn!" Ennis said as he began to come back to earth. "That felt really good!"
Bill gave him a brief hug, kissed him on the neck and then, pulled back to look at him. "You okay?"
"Yeah." Ennis smiled.
"You coming over to the dark side?" Bill winked as he asked.
"I don't think so, Bill," Ennis met his eyes and touched a finger down his cheek, "but that did feel good. I might be interested in doing it again a time or two."
"Okay."
"But I don't want to hurt you, Bill. I know I'm not going to want a relationship."
Bill shrugged. "I'll be okay. I am very attracted to you!" he admitted, grinning, "but I'm young. I'm just having fun right now. I'm not trying to get serious."
So Ennis came over a couple more times and they messed around with great enthusiasm and playfulness. But he could tell that despite what he had said, Bill's feelings were stronger than he was letting on, so he decided to bring it up again and tell Bill he thought they should stop.
He wasn't sure how to bring it up and ended up waiting until he was just about at the door one night that he'd gone over there.
"Bill..."
"I know. Just let me hold you one more minute."
Ennis smiled at those memories as he pulled into the driveway. He and Bill still kept in touch and Bill was in a committed relationship now, had been for a couple of years. Ennis hoped he'd find love like that someday.
