Chapter Five

After a hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs, toast, bacon and pancakes, Jack & Ennis decided to spend the afternoon at the beach working on their tans and playing the Rating Game...

"Okay, what do you think of her?"

"She's kind of short but the rack is nice. Squeezable! I'd give her a 7." Jack rolled his eyes and laughed. Only Ennis would use a word like rack.

"I don't like her hair. It's too frizzy! So I'm going to have to deduct a point. 6" Jack guessed since he was willingly rating women on body parts and general attractiveness, he couldn't be too judgemental about Ennis's word choice!

"Now, what about that one? Her hair would look nice spread out on the pillow. Ooh, nice ass, too!" Ennis noticed. "I'd say 8 just for that ass alone!"

"I don't know, she's kinda skinny. And a little short on boobage. I'm thinking 5, " was Jack's rating.

"What about her?"

Ennis snorted and rolled his eyes. "Let's assume she has a great personality!"

They turned and grinned at each other, then turned back to see a hunky guy walking by. Dark hair, big broad shoulders, washboard abs, nice buns, and without thinking, they both rated him. Aloud.

"7"

"8"

A moment of uncomfortable silence...

"Who would you match him with, Big Rack or Long Tall Frizzy?" Jack asked.

"Neither one," Ennis replied. "He deserves Nice Ass!"

Though they soon got bored with the rating game, both Jack and Ennis continued to pay attention to all the loveliness and charm passing by as they soaked up the sun, heading for the water as they swam or stretched out on towels as they went for a walk.

Toward the end of the afternoon, as they were trying to figure out which blue and white striped chairs were theirs, Jack's vague sense of disquiet about how the afternoon had been going began to crystallize.

Jack's #7, tall, dark, with washboard abs in royal blue speedos had been walking toward them. Though he was only minimally aware of it, he'd been staring at him and as he got closer, Jack realized that #7 was staring at him, too. Just as he reached them and was passing by, he winked at Jack. And Jack's stomach fluttered in response.

"Hey, I can get lost if you two want to make a love connection!" Ennis offered, grinning. Jack shoved him, playfully, and they kept walking.

But as he spread out his towel and lay back on the chaise, Jack thought about the afternoon. He'd admired a lot of girls, but he hadn't wanted any of them. He'd been noticing the guys, too. How tall they were, what their bodies looked like. Was he attracted to them? It kind of seemed like he was.

But why would he suddenly be attracted to guys? It didn't happen that way, did it? But maybe it wasn't sudden. I think I've had that fluttery feeling before when I looked at guys. Vague examples began to present themselves, blurry pieces of memory that he was sure had seemed like nothing at the time.

Did I just ignore those moments?

"What are you worrying about?"

"Huh? ... Oh! Nothing, really ..."

Ennis frowned. "We tell each other everything!"

"I know... But I don't really know what's wrong, myself. I'll tell you when I know."

"Okay." But Jack could tell Ennis wanted to ask him more and just wasn't sure what to ask.

They had pizza for dinner, loaded with everything, and then finished their beers on the front porch, just as the sun was setting in glorious shades of orange and purple.

Ennis felt like going out. Jack decided to stay home.

Jack smiled and waved as Ennis was headed out the door, but he must have seen something in Jack's face because he turned around and sat down next to him on the chocolate brown leather sofa.

"You're not in trouble are you?"

Jack chuckled. "No!"

"Okay. Then whatever it is, we'll figure it out. It will be okay." Ennis said. Jack smiled in response but then, just didn't know what to say, so he looked away and didn't say anything.

"Maybe we can talk about it when I get back."

"Maybe so," Jack shrugged. "Hey, why'd you ask if I was in trouble?"

"Remember that time in 5th grade when you cheated on your history test?" Ennis asked.

"Oh, yeah! I blanked out on some date we were supposed to know!"

"Well, you didn't tell me for 2 days because you thought I wouldn't want to be your friend anymore..." Ennis reminded him and Jack laughed, remembering.

"You know you're not going to lose me, right? Best friends forever?" Ennis asked.

Jack sighed. "It's okay! Go have fun. I'll see you later!"

Ennis left but he knew Jack wasn't okay. He just didn't know why.

But it seemed like Jack had frowned most of the afternoon, lost in some la-la land Ennis had not been invited to. Ennis was still thinking about it as he pulled out of the driveway. It was so weird for Jack, who normally never met a thought he didn't share, to have been so quiet.

Maybe he'd ask him about it again when he got back.
