Chapter Three
As he plopped down on the love seat to write brief session notes, Jack hoped he hadn't rushed his last client out the door. While she was on the table, he'd been fully focused on her and the intuitive impressions he received and healing work he was doing. But right after he closed their session and brought her a glass of water, his mind began reviewing what he was planning to make for dinner.
It was Ennis's first night back and he was planning the baked pasta casserole he'd tried on his parents on their last night here. He'd already bought everything he needed but he kept wondering if maybe there was something he'd forgotten. For some reason, he was nervous after not seeing Ennis all summer.
So as he mentally ran through the list, he realized his client was sharing an insight and he'd completely missed it. He felt his face flush as he asked her to repeat what she'd said. As he handed her the essential oil blend she was taking home with her, she'd patted his hand and said not to worry, that she'd once been young and in love herself.
"No, it's ..."
But she was walking away, already, and with a lighter step after several healing sessions. Jack chuckled and began closing up the shop.
Friday was his favorite day of the week because it was dedicated to healing. Instead of just recommending and selling the essential oils, crystals and herbal supplements that would support and facilitate healing, he got to work with clients directly.
But this particular Friday had seemed to drag on endlessly! He had deliberately scheduled only a few clients and still, it had seemed like the day would never end. He turned out the last light and then realized he could still smell his bergamot and ylang ylang blend. He'd forgotten to turn off and unplug the diffuser!
Finally, he was on his way!
The air was different as he walked home on Fridays. He could smell tension and anticipation and excitement mixed in with salt air and suntan lotion. People expected more of a beach weekend and those expectations wafted through the air on a coconut breeze. Normally, Jack just ignored all that energy and kept on walking.
But this time, he opened the door to anticipation and embraced it. He couldn't wait to see his best friend again!
As he neared the front porch, he saw Ennis's feet first and his stomach clenched. Then, there he was, rocking slowly in the rocking chair. As they hugged and said things like, "God, it's good to see you again!", Jack felt something shift into place. A rightness. An "everything's okay now" kind of feeling. He tucked it away with plans to savor it later and they went inside for dinner.
Ennis sat at the counter and they talked nonstop all the way through dinner--preparing and eating it.
Jack heard all about Ennis's international adventures, including a few escapades his parents didn't know about. And he told Ennis all about the people who'd been wandering in and out of the shop all summer long.
They made plans for hanging out at Sweet Orange all weekend, unless they decided to join some other friends first on the beach. That night, they both felt too tired to go anywhere so they looked through Jack's DVD collection until they found a movie they could agree on. Sitting there next to Ennis, in his family room, holding the remote, armed with popcorn, ready to watch a movie, Jack felt a wave of nostalgia remembering hundreds of nights just like this. I don't need anything else but moments like this, he thought.
Later, though, while he was lying awake, staring through the windows at the moonlight and wondering when he'd finally fall asleep, Jack realized that something had been different about tonight. He'd noticed Ennis in a way he didn't think he ever had before. He kept catching himself staring at his eyes and noticing the new highlights in his hair.
And when they'd hugged, he'd thought about the strength and warmth he felt with Ennis's arms around him. It had taken a while to let go! He'd noticed how Ennis's shoulders were pressing against his. He'd felt the press of his stomach, the band of his arms around his back. His hands had noticed the muscles beneath them.
What was all that about?
He'd never noticed those things before!
And there'd been a few moments when Ennis was describing some of his sexual adventures that Jack had felt a little turned on. It almost felt like Ennis was flirting with him. Not that he was, of course, but there was something about the way he talked about those experiences that both sounded and felt sexy!
Weird!
I better get to sleep.
Jack turned over and grabbed an oil blend that he knew would put him to sleep in just a few minutes. As he drifted off, he thought about how he and Ennis told each other everything.
But that might be about to change.
