Reconciliation with Lady Catherine has its disadvantages, Darcy reflects, as his aunt and Mr. Collins trade pompous pronouncements over dinner.
A slight sound draws Darcy’s attention to Elizabeth, almost choking behind her napkin. Unwisely, he meets her eyes. Her mad desire to laugh leaps across the table to him, so that he only just saves himself by biting his lip and hastily dropping his gaze. He dares not look at anyone again, least of all his wife.
It strikes him, not for the first time, that marriage to Elizabeth is a more dangerous and delightful thing than he ever anticipated.
