This is something I personally have wanted for a long time, and now it's here: We have our very own
Shousetsu Bang*Bang Wiki!
This is not for archiving stories or artwork; instead, this is for archiving everything else SSBB-related. There are several reasons we've wanted to put one of these together, and here are just a few:
- Though we on the editorial staff are on record as being unilaterally opposed to having official summaries for stories, we know several readers would prefer having them; we've also heard several calls for crowdsourced summaries. This is the compromise ground -- now anyone can create a summary for any submission and have it be both visible and up for communal debate.
- This is also a place to put both content warnings and content notifications. We've got it right on the main page: 'Please be aware that there may be spoilers for contributions on their various pages.' That means that even if something would give away a plot twist or an ending, it's fair game here. And we don't want to think of this just as an opportunity for warning about objectionable content -- if a story has dragons, for instance, this is a good place to say, it's got dragons!
- It's searchable! If, for instance again, you search 'dragons', you'll get a list of every page that mentions those lovely beasts.
- Lots of stories that get published in SSBB have related material that isn't SSBB-appropriate, for whatever reason. With a wiki, authors have a good way of letting interested readers know where to find more tales of characters they love.
- Many creators have chosen to host their notes offsite, occasionally on sites that have gone the way of the dinosaur. We'd like to have a way to preserve those before they go extinct.
- If you're a creator who feels your secret project identity is a little too secret, here's how to link back to your tumblr/website/portfolio/whatever. If you're a reader who'd like to follow your favorite artists and authors, this is a good way to find out where they are!
- It'll allow for unofficial additional content, such as themed rec lists, story remixes, links to review sites -- you name it! If, say, you want to make that page that lists all the stories with dragons in them? Go for it! Want to gather all the spooky horror stories onto one page? Be our guest! If you create something and you don't know where to put it, let us know and we'll help find it a home.
So as you can tell, I'm pretty excited. It is, however, intensely in the early stages of being filled in with information; all the issues have their individual pages, but most of the submission and contributor links on them lead nowhere That's where everyone else comes in, though!
We've set it up so anyone can edit anything! While we encourage creators to drive their own work and bio pages where possible, all pages are fair game. If you see your favorite story without a summary, write it. If you know an artist's portfolio tumblr, add a link to their bio. If you find a blank page for an author but literally all you know about that person is their pseudonym and what they've contributed, make a page with even only that little info. When in doubt, leave it blank, and hopefully someone will come along afterward and fill in the gaps.
And as always, if you see something that you think is great, might need some tweaking, or is just plain broken, tell us ASAP.
