You know how if you're going out late, or staying at a friend's house, or doing anything even remotely 'dangerous' compared to life in the 1960s your parents insist on you checking in with them to prove that you're still alive and safe? Well it'd be kinda nice if they applied the same courtesy when the situation was reversed.

Don't get me wrong, I have absolutely no doubt that the parentals are totally capable of driving themselves to Eastbourne and back in the space of a weekend without needing me to look out for them. But when you've got the old family friend they've been to visit phoning you up to ask if they've got home safely, and then worrying that they aren't home yet, it would be quite nice if somebody answered their fricking mobile when I tried to call them. Instead, dad has his switched off and mum's just keeps ringing and ringing. It won't even take me to voicemail so I can leave a message that she probably won't pick up for like a week.

On the plus side, if today is the day I become an orphan at least I won't have to worry about whether to put Caroline or John on the sofa tomorrow.
