01. perfect world // liz phair
home is very ordinary / I know I was born to lead a double life of murderous strife and misery / and when I find it, I know I'll make sense of me
This song works well for pre-Island Juliet, the one who thinks she's mess, not a leader. But there are hints of the kick-ass Other that she’s going to become, she just needs the chance.
02. i’m going to hell // the long blondes
so many things I used to think about / I'd never dare act out / I didn't want to risk the chance of someone finding out / now I'm going to hell, so I may as well, make it worth my while
Even though Juliet clearly did want to leave the island, I think she also felt being an Other-being put in a position where she was clearly a leader, but also had to do some pretty terrible things-was kind of liberating. And maybe part of her enjoyed some of the not-so-nice things she had to do because of the power that came with them.
03. a good start // maria taylor
it was a faint line that brought you here / and a pulse that kept you in time / it was the comfort of a tradition / but the fear that you were not that kind, but you are / and it's a shame now, baby, you can't see yourself in everything you're running from
Even though I’m not super-keen on Juliet/Jack, I found their relationship in season 3 intriguing because it showed some key elements of Juliet's character, back when she was such an enigma. Her attraction to Jack felt, to me, very much like her attraction to her ex-husband and she seemed to be repeating her mistakes-finding a confident, yet controlling man who would overshadow her. Those somewhat self-destructive elements of her character are super-interesting to me, as was her ability to recognize herself falling into that pattern and then to distance herself from it.
04. the cave // mumford & sons
and I'll find strength in pain / and I will change my ways / I'll know my name as it's called again
Juliet gets left on the island, left by Jack, left to be a leader again. One of the reasons she’s such a great character is that she’s able to take the pain and the horrible things that happen to her and carry on and change and still be strong and awesome.
05. handle with care // jenny lewis (feat. conor oberst, m. ward, & ben gibbard)
been beat up and battered around / been sent up and I've been shot down / you're the best thing that I've ever found / handle me with care
Aaaand now we’ve arrived at the Juliet/Sawyer part of the mix. Going into the relationship, both Juliet and Sawyer were probably a little gun-shy, especially considering their respective past relationships. It's great that they managed to come together and have such a great relationship, but Juliet in particular (given her reaction once the O6 showed up) still seemed to be expecting to have her heart broken.
06. breakable // ingrid michaelson
we are so fragile / and our cracking bones make noise / and we are just / breakable, breakable, breakable, girls and boys
These last three are the Juliet heartbreak songs. WHY COULDN’T SHE HAVE JUST BEEN HAPPY, YOU GUYS?
07. baby, we’ll be fine // the national
just say something perfect, something I can steal, say, look at me / baby, we'll be fine / all we've gotta do is be brave and be kind
It totally kills me that, by the time “The Incident” rolled around, it seemed like all Sawyer really needed to do was really reassure Juliet, to say something to her that could have managed to assuage her fears and insecurities and everything would have been fine. The problem was, given what they were going through and how quickly it was all happening, there’s also a sense that no matter what he could have said, it wouldn’t have been enough.
08. black pear tree // the mountain goats & kaki king
i saw the future in a dream last night / somebody’s gonna get hurt, somebody’s gonna get hurt / I hope it’s not me / but I suspect it’s going to have to be
Oh, Juliet. You are the most tragic and heroic one of them all.
