Rest in peace, Nikki and Paulo
You guys, I have a shameful confession to make: I've been re-watching s3 of LOST and I've discovered I very much enjoy "Exposé." I know, I know. It's terrible and Nikki and Paulo are the worst characters in the history of the show who weren't played by Bai Ling. But...I kind of love it?
First of all, it's incredibly meta and I'm a sucker for that. Second of all, I sincerely love the idea that all the crazy stuff that Jack, Locke, et. al. found and took so incredibly seriously was stumbled upon by these two idiots first. And there are some really great moments-Ben and Juliet in the Pearl, for one (a scene I'd completely forgotten about but kind of love, if only because it's the only look we get at "primitive Other wear" Juliet)-and the episode really takes on a much deeper meaning when watched in retrospect, considering the whole series.
Because it's about all the things that the main characters would die for, these kind of crazy-island things that most normal people (like Nikki and Paulo) would just brush off as insane. It's these normal people who get killed and are forgotten, who never get anything out of being on this mystical island, all in the service of Jacob and those all-important candidates. And it's not just Nikki and Paulo, but also very single survivor that died after the crash or in the flaming arrow attack, as well as every person who died in the crash just so Jacob could bring the candidates to the island.
Those deaths are indirectly because of the candidates, but Nikki and Paulo are actually killed by the candidates. They're not dead when Sawyer and Hurley and Sun bury them. They're only dead because the main characters decided to take charge and do what they think should be done (just like always) and the result is a couple of dead people (just like always).
Also, I really enjoy the part where Sawyer and Hurley and Sun and everyone try to piece together what happened? And how it's the episode where Sun finds out about Sawyer setting up her kidnapping and then slaps him across the face? IDK, IDK, it's just a pretty interesting episode, is what I'm saying.
