How she became a bad cop isn't so much the issue any more, it's just that no one on the force trusts her to do her job well enough to keep them safe, and so they don't want to work with her. And John's gonna be a dick about it, but he's also gonna help her fix the problem.

Exactly right. He's trying to get her attention, and I think he may have succeeded. *g*

I have vague, unformed theories about how his dad was more of a dick than he's acknowledged. Like, just the fact that his dad wasn't there during an assault doesn't seem bad enough to hate the man for life, you know?

Oh, yeah. I would love to hear more on your unformed theories. I have a few of my own - for one, that the assault was not just a beating. He's so tight-lipped about the details that it made me raise an eyebrow. I'm really hoping we get a bit more of the backstory as time goes on, because clearly Ben has a few deep-seated anger issues of his own.

Lydia remains completely awesome, and Cordero is totally growing on me, because he seems to get where she's coming from and because he's got detective chops. Regina King's awesomeness knows no bounds.

And! The last scene...Cooper calling in that favor, heh...it's been 4 days since that episode aired and I am still full of flail. *g*

I've wondered that as well. The most benign thought I've had about the whole situation is that Ben Sr. knew an attack was imminent, and instead of warning his family he got out of dodge and left them alone. Now, he may have done it with some vague idea of drawing attention away from them, etc etc, at least that could be how he justified it to himself later, but I'm wondering if he knew they were in danger and did nothing to protect them/let them protect themselves.

I think Ben Sr. had another family, that he walked out on Ben & Ben's mom and sort of set up shop w/ someone else. That would explain another piece of Ben's daddy issues.

And, as I said above, I kind of think there might have been more abuse @ home than Ben suggested. His whole 'its worse than that' schtick doesn't really play if the *only* thing his dad did was pick the wrong night to be away from the house. I think he would have admitted to domestic violence during his conversation w/ Cooper, but he might not admitted to more psychological abuse like the stuff we saw w/ the kid mowing the lawn.

Hmmm. You know, even if his dad *wasn't* exactly abusive, his response after the attack could inform Ben's anger now. Especially if the attack on Ben & his mom was more than 'just' a beating, and Ben Sr. failed to acknowledge that or only acknowledged it in some really fucked up way(s).

As I said, my ideas are all vague. *shrug*
