As I was walking an adorable little pug today, we met an equally adorable little pit bull puppy. No collar, no leash, no visible owners, but friendly as all get-out. She accepted scritches willingly, and liked playing with the pug, so I slipped a leash on her. After dropping the pug off, I took the little pit bull around to see if anyone knew who she belonged to. Nobody did. :-(
So I put her in my car, gave her some milkbones, and took her to the local animal control center. As we were walking in, two couples who had just submitted their applications to be allowed to adopt a puppy saw her, and they each wanted her. I was so tempted to just give her to one of them, but we figured that it was best to give the girl's real owner a chance to get her back, first.
In the foyer of the drop area, there was an older gentleman ahead of me. He had trapped a feral cat. The nice, smart lady behind the counter was trying to convince him to allow them to release the cat back into his neighborhood after neutering/spaying it, but he would have none of it. No matter how she tried to educate him, he firmly believed that he'd be able to catch all of the feral cats in his area and turn them in, and eventually he'd have no neighborhood cats. The nice lady (and me, towards the end) tried to teach him why that wasn't likely, and it was better to have six fixed cats than the twelve (or more) he'd end up with if he kept creating space in the ecosystem for them. He was a asshat, though, and nothing she said could get through his thick skull. He eventually left screaming, "Next time, I'll just leave it on the hillside!" Meaning, I think, that he'd kill it and leave the dead body lying around somewhere. What a nasty lunatic. Oh, and apparently he owns cats. Hopefully because of that he wouldn't really ever do such a thing.
After he left, I turned in the puppy. Man, was she cute and sweet. I almost totally forgot to get any pictures, so here are the ones I did take. Sorry they suck. You can't actually tell how small and cute she really is in these pics. She fits in my lap, though. She was a little nervous when I took these; we were in the pound foyer at the time.
Don't you just love this face? (Not mine. Hers.)

Don't you just love her eyes?

And..that...nose? Hee.

EDIT: Here is the photo they took at the shelter. Her eyes are actually yellow, but they used a flash, so the reflection from her tapetum lucidum(s?) makes them look blue. But you can see how small she is, and how friendly.
