Yikes! I am worried. It's all hazy here, too.
My friend Jon is a forest service firefighter. I have no idea where he is right now.

From Tahoe to Klamath???! Gods, I had no idea. But that does explain the absurdly sucky air quality.

A map of "large" fire incidents across the U.S. (in which you see a disproportionate number of little dots in the norhtern half of California): http://activefiremaps.fs.fed.us/modules/lg_fire/data/lg_fire_nifc_2008-06-24.png

Excellent California fire information, updated often:

It does this almost every other year. Sometimes I wonder how it is there's enough dead scrub left to burn. I haven't had to evacuate my parents' house yet, but it has been completely cut off from the outside world before.

Um, both? Wildfires in the hills threatening to cut my parents' house off happens about every five years or so. I think it's gotten a little bit worse but it was pretty bad already, so it's hard to be really sure; I'd have to do a statistical analysis and that sounds too much like work.

But yeah, basically California is a pyro.

I wonder how long until the Army says 'hey, you need to go fight fires in Cali', which ALMOST happened last year. (as in, we had everything packed up and ready to go, and at the last minute we were told 'nope - you're not needed!'

I live in San Francisco and this morning we could easily smell the fires burning from here. It wasn't enough to keep people inside around here but it smelled strongly like a nearby campfire. Hopefully the firefighters there get some help soon
