Woot, I now have a facebook account...I have finally arrived, oh yes. It still seems like something I'll never go visit after a couple weeks, but hey.
During the summer break, some students from Daito, Shimane (where I'm currently staying) came to Richmond as part of the Sister Cities program. Well, they were actually from Unnan-shi, which Daito is a part of. I did a sort of 2 week part-time job, which involved being the driver for this program. Anyway, last week while me and the other exchange students were teaching at Daito Middle School, I met 3 of the students that had gone to Richmond. It was mainly setup by the city officials here because they thought it would be fun for us to meet again. Truth be told, however, it WAS a job for me. I mean, I had a fun time driving them around and getting to practice Japanese, but they were mostly middle schoolers so it's not like we got to be really good friends or anything.
Even so, I was kinda looking forward to seeing them again. Just like I thought though, it was very ackward. Heh heh. It was me, two girls and one guy trying to come up with stuff to talk about on the spur of the moment...while being filmed for the local tv station. Yeah. At one point, one of the girls suggested that we go bowling this Tuesday (today) and I said sure. I like bowling, what the heck. Though I really didn't expect that we would do anything, you know. Somehow though, they managed to find my phone number here at my host family's host and long story short they came over today. Instead of bowling though we just talked for an hour or so. As it turned out though, the one guy didn't come and in his place one of the other girls came and so did a girl who's also my neighbor. So it was me, 3 middle school girls and one high school girl. It was a bit strange and will probably never happen again, but whatever.
I was sort of dreading them coming over simply because there is NOTHING to do and I pictured us sitting around a table not saying much. Fortunately though it turned out to be a lot of fun. Plus I was actually able to understand most of what they said...compared to during the summer when I had to really strain to understand them. I'm sure they were using words that they thought I might now, but still, it made me feel like my time here hasn't been a complete waste of time. I got to tell them a little about life in Tokyo and what not, which was pretty interesting to them (at least I think it was...) since they're from here...a very rural area (seriously, everyone here grows rice).
Oh yeah, as part of the new FFXII campaign, Suntory released these Final Fantasy XII Potion drinks today. They're obviously supposed to be like the potions from the game...it's a pretty cool idea I think. So I bought one. They're really tiny and taste like shit! Seriously, it's nasty stuff...but guess what, none of you in America are ever going to get any! HA!!
