Matt, Derek and I went out for a night on the town in Roppongi last night...It was an interesting experience to say the least. Roppongi, if you don't know, is THE gaijin central for Tokyo/Japan. If you're a gaijin and want to have some fun, there's the place to go. I'd say at any given time we could see 3 or 4 other non-Japanese people there, which is astronomical here.

It's also home to probably the most "massage" parlors and bars like that, as well normal bars. It's got to be the most boring place ever during the day, but at night it's quite bustling. As we walked down the street, three young men, we were confronted by numerous guys in suites standing outside seedy looking businesses trying to get us to go in, along with the occasional woman who would come and discreetly say, "massaji".

Although we all were addressed at some point, Derek must have a look that says, "I want a prostitute and some beer" because it seemed like 10x as many people came to him. At one point an African guy (there was a surprising number of Africans in front seedy places trying to coax people inside) managed to get Derek's attention with something like, "[in English] 7000, all you can drink for an hour!" and thus reeled me and Matt in as well. So there we were, standing on the sidewalk with this guy trying to persuade us into some club, eventually marking the price down to 3000, all the while saying things like, "Our hostess in here are there to do anything to make you happy...you're happiness is guaranteed...you know what I mean? You're happiness is guaranteed..." And you know, guaranteed happiness is hard to turn down, especially at only $30, but turn it down we did. There's also the fact that, since you're in Roppongi, you're looking for at least some kind of action, so to tell these guys that you're not interested not only doesn't make sense, they know you don't mean it. Of course, looking to pick someone up and getting a "massage" are completely different.

We ended up going to a few different bars, missed the last train on purpose and staggered back home sometime around 7am...the night went surprisingly fast and so did my money. At one point I guess I thought it was a good idea to buy a Halloween bear-pirate beenie baby doll from Hard Rock Cafe, since I have one now.
