into the wild

Man, I've seen alot of movies lately. Anyways, I don't have a huge amount to say about Into the Wild, except that in some ways it is the ultimate 90s nostalgia movie, though unlike mysterious skin or last days it involves neither drugged out rockstars or child rape. Instead it involves Emile Hirsch going on a grungy quest to find himself while roaming america wearing a slightly less gay version of River Phoenix's wardrobe in My Own Private Idaho, while Eddie Vedder growls and moans about being free among the trees on the soundtrack. It was very well-done, but rather slow, and almost unintentionally funny. But it was directed by Sean Penn, so of course it sometimes comes across as melodramatic and unsubtle. Also, I sometimes wanted to punch the kid in the face for being so annoyingly sanctimonious, but I think the movie doesn't completely believe him.
