Hi.

I've really only finally logged in to LJ so I can comment on all the wonderful fanfic I've been discovering over the last few months. I'm a reader, not a writer, which makes me appreciate those of you who share your writing even more! My current fandom obsession is Archie Kennedy and Horatio Hornblower, but a few months before that it was Richard ( Read more... )

Hello and welcome to the fandom! And thank you so much for all the comments that you left on my fics! It's so long since I've written any Hornblower fic, but I'm so glad you're enjoying them :)

Thank you!! I think yours were some of the very first fics I read, and they set the standard for everything that was to come. Although the level of authorship in this whole fandom, as I've found it on LJ at least, is astounding.

I think it was you who wrote about the slightly lonely joys of coming to a fandom long after it was mostly dead... Like arriving at what had obviously been a wonderful party, but most everyone had already gone home. And I had to laugh because then you and others created a new party, had fun and went home, and then I finally arrived years later! But it is good to see that some of you are still active, and I prefer to think of this fandom as 'immortal.' And it really seems that the writing gets better and better as the years went on - more thoughtful, well-researched, and shall I say 'canonical?' I mean, one can still derive enjoyment from early fandom stories where, say, Sir Edward married Kitty, and Horatio plays the guitar and tunefully serenades Georgiana Darcy, but since yours were the stories I read first, there's always that voice in my head saying "but we know that's not what REALLY happened!"

Ha! You're absolutely right! It was me who wrote that and that's exactly what happened :) The tv side of the fandom was more or less dead when I came along but we managed to revive it. Then following_sea came about and the rest, as they say, is history! It's such a friendly community, and although it's quiet now, there's still so much great stuff posted there. I tried to make sure all posts were tagged so hopefully you should be able to sift through all the content.

I think you're right about the canon nature of the fics developing over the years, I'd be very proud if we were able to contribute to that in a modest way.

Yes, I've been working my way through Following Sea. It's lovely, and so full of good things that it will probably take months to read them all. I'm already sad about that future day when I will discover that I have read everything that has been written...thrice. The worst is when I find myself in the middle of a really well-written tale, only to find that it was never finished and probably never will be, since the last entry was posted over ten years ago. Oh well...

Welcome to the fandom! If you're still looking for recs, I have a long rec list of Archie/Horatio fics, and I'm happy to share it with you if you're interested (although you may have read some of them before).

Also, your comments on my fic have absolutely made my day!! Thank you!!

Recommendations? Oh yes please! I've found a lot of wonderful fic here and there, but more is always better. And I read them over and over anyway...
