Isn't it bizarre? When I first I started writing Castiel taking off his clothing, I was like, wait, what's happening? As I continued writing, my responses were basically the same as Dean: wait, this is really happening?

I'm really glad it was in character for you. I was worried it'd be just too bizarre to be in character. :)

This has some absolutely gorgeous lines and is overall just really fascinating. I don't like being the pushy "MOAR!" person, but this is a case where I would really love to see what happens next.

Thanks! To tell the truth, I'm not entirely sure what happens next myself, since this was written as a one shot. But hey, who knows what the future may hold...

I love this! Such a good look at Castiel as a character. And basically just a beautiful piece of writing. Also, the image of Dean butt-naked in Cas's jacket, was simultaneously uber-hot, and super sweet. My fave line was that bit where Dean tells Cas to take care of his jacket, but it's like he's really telling Cas to take care of himself. :P Absolutely wonderful.

Thank you! I took find the idea of Castiel standing around naked in Dean's jacket to be a weird mix of hot and sweet and sad and strange. Also, Dean telling Cas to take care of the jacket is one of my favorite lines too--Dean's gotta let Cas know he cares in a sneaky, roundabout way :)

This is such a wonderful character piece. I really love Castiel's speech as he's disrobing - the dichotomy of what he's saying and doing is so strange and yet it's clear that to him it makes perfect sense.

An excellent fic - I look forward to whatever you come up with next! :)

ETA: you're quoting Kipling in your title? How did you think of that?!

Re: the Kipling - I actually got the quote from The Wizard of Oz the movie. I realized on my last pass over the final draft that somehow a lot of Wizard of Oz references had snuck into the story and I thought, why not make it a motif? So I figured I'd find a really cool quote from the movie and put that as my title. It's taken from the cowardly lion:

Cowardly Lion: Courage! What makes a king out of a slave? Courage! What makes the flag on the mast to wave? Courage! What makes the elephant charge his tusk in the misty mist, or the dusky dusk? What makes the muskrat guard his musk? Courage! What makes the sphinx the seventh wonder? Courage! What makes the dawn come up like thunder? Courage! What makes the Hottentot so hot? What puts the "ape" in apricot? What have they got that I ain't got?

I thought it was apropos. As it turns out, The Wizard of Oz ripped the line off from Kipling, and there we go ;) It is a beautiful line.
