My flist seems to be imploding with the latest kerfuffle involving to warn or not to warn. The fandom I came from had a culture of basically zero warnings, and almost no story description before you got in. Hell, you were lucky if you even got a pairing. That's how I grew up writing, and that's how I like it since I feel the more you describe a story (through warnings, pairings, whatever) the more you spoil. Just my humble opinion, and I recognize peeps' mileage may vary. Of course, I make concessions to the fandoms I'm in now by including pairings and ratings because I want readership, but in case I ever go crazy and forget to warn a story appropriately, I'm going to post a blanket warning to this lj:
WARNING: I do not write for the warm fuzzies. I do not write hurt/comfort. I do not write happy stories about frolicking butterflies and puppies and rainbows. Nobody goes tripping off into the sunset together at the end of my stories. I do not write PWP's or schmoop that you can cuddle up with on a snowy day. I write sad stories, stories where people live, die, and everything in between. The best you get is, as I describe them, a mildly 'hopeful' ending. That's just the kind of writer I am. If you're not into that sort of fic, we should probably part ways amicably.
I think my general policy for future fic labels will be something like, 'Warning: Unhappy things happen. For more specific warnings, click here' and link to another entry that specifies the exact things that happen. I hope this will be a suitable compromise.
