Dean knew Cas would be a spoil-sport from the moment he zapped himself into his ice skates, too frustrated to even bother to attemp to figure out the laces. Dean almost has a heart attack when a lady standing next to them let out a whine of confusion as Castiel disappears then reappears before her eyes. Without even trying to consol the poor woman, now sitting down with her head between her knees, breathing heavily to keep herself from passing out, he grabs Castiel’s arm and tugs him towards the rink.

“Cas, you can’t do stuff like that in front of people; they’ll think they’re going mad!” He looks over his shoulder and finds the poor woman slumped in her seat, with a man, who’s probably her husband, gently fanning her flushed face; he feels guilty for a moment, but then turns to Castiel again, who isn’t even slightly ruffled.

“Get on the ice and don’t scare anyone else.”

Castiel stares blankly at him, which probably means he’s plotting Dean’s demise, but Dean holds his gaze, glaring openly, until Castiel finally gives in. Gripping the chest-high rink wall, Castiel sets one foot on the ice, before shifting slightly so he can put the other one down next to it. He looks at Dean as if to say, “Ha!”, before Dean gives him an annoyed nudge with his elbow and steps onto the ice with a lot more grace. Dean stretches his arm out.

“Need to hold my hand, Cas?”

“No, Dean, I don’t, but thank you for your concern.”

If ever Castiel has sounded sarcastic, now is the moment; it makes Dean grin and he watches as Castiel struggles to find his balance before finally letting go of the wall. As soon as he does, Dean skates in circles around him, laughing as Sam rockets past them yelling, “Be gentle, Dean, it’s his first time!”

“Look, even Sasquatch has more poise than you, and you’re an angel!”

“We are graceful when we fly, Dean, not when we’re partaking in silly human activities.”
Dean stops looping around him finally and faces towards Castiel.

“C’mon, Cas, it’s easy; you just push from side to side gently and you’ll pick up speed.” He slides along the ice backwards and after a moment, Castiel begins to skate towards him, looking awkward with his hands pinned to his sides, like he’s too embarrassed to even think about holding them out for balance. Eventually, Castiel picks up enough speed that Dean has to turn around and face forward - his skating abilities only go so far - and he begins skating alongside Castiel.

“See, you’re getting it!” Dean smiles at Castiel, happy that something’s actually going right for once.

“He’s cheating, Dean!” Sam cries as he passes them again, breeze blowing his hair about his head like Medusa’s snakes. The smile slides right off Dean’s face as he glances at Castiel’s feet and realises that he’s floating a couple of inches off the ice. He cuts in front of Castiel, turning his feet sideways and spraying a light mist of ice shavings up the leg of Castiel’s pants. Castiel stops less than an inch away from Dean’s body and Dean can see the faint pink tinge across Castiel’s nose from the cold.

“Really, Cas? I paid eight bucks for your fairy-ass to skate, and you’re going to waste my money by floating?”

Castiel’s skates clack against the ice as he lowers himself back down; he then stares at the collar on Dean’s jacket, as though he’s feeling too guilty to meet Dean’s eyes.

“I apologise,” Castiel says quietly, and Dean is about to tell him that it’s fine, when Sam comes shooting past them catcalling. Dean realises how close they’re still standing and gently slides backwards to allow more space between them. Not five seconds later, a kid of about nine skates between them, making them both jump. Dean can feel his balance go as his skates slip forwards, but the rest of him stays behind. He windmills his arms in the hopes of staying upright, but it doesn’t work. As a last resort, he grabs Castiel’s coat and tugs. Unfortunately, it just serves to pull Castiel off balance, too.

Dean hits the ice hard groaning from the cold, wetness below him, then Castiel lands heavily on his chest, knocking the rest of the air out of his lungs, and he can’t make another sound for a good few seconds.

“Dean, I think this was a bad idea,” Castiel says, his breath blowing warmly over Dean’s face. Dean wheezes in response, because that’s really all he can do, and Castiel looks vaguely concerned, like he’s been practicing his facial expressions.

“Are you all right?” Castiel asks, and Dean’s eyes begin to water.

“Can’t. Breathe. Get off me,” Dean rasps, hating the way he knows everyone is staring at them as they sail past. Castiel struggles for a while and ends up on his hands and knees over Dean; it alleviates the pressure on Dean’s chest, making it a lot easier for him to breathe, but Castiel doesn’t move further than that.

“Cas, get up,” Dean complains, but Castiel just looks at him.

“I don’t know if I can; it’s too slippery and I don’t think I’m skilled enough to.”

Out of nowhere, a hand appears between their faces and they both look up to find Sam, eyes crinkled, laughing at them. Castiel takes the proffered hand and Sam pulls him easily to his feet; Dean, needing to spare at least some of his dignity, ignores them as they both offer to help him up and eventually stands up on his own. His back aches and the water is starting to seep through his jacket.

“I think I’m gonna sit this one out,” he mumbles, trying to keep his teeth from chattering.

“Mind if I join you?” Castiel asks and Dean mock-frowns.

“You’re just happy that you get out of skating.”

Castiel smiles, but doesn’t say anything as they make their way - Dean skating and Castiel floating just above the ice again - to the exit. They wobble their way, still in their skates, to a table in the food court area, where Dean flops into a chair with a grunt, while Castiel sits with a bit more grace.

“Sorry about this, Cas,” Dean starts, watching his brother winding in and out of people on the ice easily. “You should have stuck with Sam; He would have you doing spins and jumps by now.”

Castiel smiles gently. “It’s not the skating that matters, Dean; I came because you asked me to.”
Dean turns to look at him, then smiles briefly in return.

“I know, Cas,” is all he says, but he knows Castiel can hear the unspoken, and I’d do the same for you, along with it.
