At first, Dean can't pinpoint the change in Cas. He knows there's something different, something stunning, but he has no idea what it is. He's wearing Dean's coat like he sometimes does and he looks tired. Its the red rimming around the edges of his eyes that tip Dean off. He's not high; not even a little. Dean hasn't seen him like this in a long time and he'd been starting to think he never would again.

"Uh," Cas starts awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck in a way that reminds Dean of a long time ago. "I got you something."

Dean is confused, has no idea what brought this on, until a lone snowflake drifts in front of his face. He had completely forgotten about Christmas. It wasn't like they had a lot to celebrate here. The weather had been getting colder, the landscape slightly frostier, and all that had made Dean think of was how many more blankets they would need to find.

Cas holds out a small, clumsily wrapped package and it strikes Dean that, even human, Cas doesn't do many things like this. A warmth lights in his chest that feels so much like happiness that he almost chokes.

There isn't much that you could get someone at the end of days that really means anything, but Dean figures that whatever it is, its the best thing he could hope for and he finds himself immensely grateful.

Awww, I love that it doesn't even matter what Castiel got him--it's just the fact that he got him anything at all :) So sweet!

I read this once, then decided I needed a second dose so read it again, lol.

The first paragraph is my favorite, I think. I don't know why, but something about Dean not knowing what's different about Cas only to realize that he's sober just makes me happy. <3
