Prologue: January
It begins like this: Eames stares at the seemingly endless list of departures on the board at Heathrow and picks a location at random. Then, he goes to the ticket counter, buys himself a ticket, and takes his first-and last-transatlantic flight to New York.
At least, that’s how he tells it. Sometimes he likes to throw in a few frills and details about finding himself or discovering the world or the spirit of adventure moving him. Depends on the audience and how likely he is to get laid off it.
But in reality, this is how it actually happens: Eames plans his trip for months, hoarding the small bits of sterling that he can, obsessively cataloguing everything in his house that his parents won’t notice being gone, and slowly, slowly accumulating a stockpile of cash thanks to Ebay and his mother’s heirloom silver set.
He sets his sights on the United States because it’s far, and his French is rubbish. He applies for a tourist visa and has it sent to a friend’s house; his parents don’t check the mail, usually, but one can never be too careful.
Then, on the day before his sixteenth birthday, Eames sneaks out in the middle of the night with a bag full of clothing, an extra pair of shoes, and a hidden pocket in his jacket filled with all the money he’s managed to save.
He leaves everything else behind and doesn’t look back.
