Quantico, Virginia - Wednesday afternoon, 7/1

Jul 01, 2009 12:34

Morgan was usually pretty neat and thorough with his paperwork, but today he was rushing a little as he finished things up almost an hour before their usual clock-out time. He wasn't quite so bad as Reid or Hotch, but leaving early (or even on time) was still somewhat out of character for him; that said, he couldn't help it. He still had things ( Read more... )

"You're... in a bit of a hurry."

Reid was pretty sure it wasn't quite the right thing to say, but he couldn't think of what he might say instead, to indicate his concern - and curiosity - for Morgan's atypical behavior.

Morgan looked up from the twiddling of his pen on the paper, a quick rat-tat-tat that paused as he peered at Reid.

"Yeah. Got some business to attend to tonight. You know how that goes."

"Yeah," he replied. Not that he was usually particularly busy himself, although he still needed to finish his own packing; he wasn't entirely sure what to bring with him to Fandom, just that it should be more than what he brought on a case.

Morgan nodded a few times, obviously thinking of what to say to that.

"You're heading off for your teaching gig tomorrow night, right? That thing in Maryland?"

The thought made Reid smile.

"Yeah, I am. It should be... It should be a nice break." You know, the one everyone had been telling him to take.

Damn right; Morgan looked pleased that Reid was excited about it. The other profiler had been so worried about losing his place in the team, or losing respect in everyone else's eyes before now...

The kid needed a rest. Which, you know, wasn't to say Morgan wasn't going to still look out for him. Well, him and Garcia. And he was pretty sure JJ would probably be calling him a time or two to check in. Not to mention Hotch and Prentiss. Rossi too, now that he thought about it.

"Glad you're looking forward to it. Like you said, should be a nice break. You all packed up?"

"Um... Not... Really?" he admitted. "I'm not really sure what I should take."

Maybe Morgan could offer some advice; he'd helped Reid with other things before, after all.

"Need some help figuring things out?"

He didn't have a deadline, after all. He'd been hoping to get the shop up and running and settle into the house by the end of the week, but it could wait. His haste had more to do with wanting to get things done than being late; as long as he was doing something, he would be fine.

"Yes. Maybe... I guess it wouldn't hurt," he replied. "I know clothes, and toiletries, and the games - that's what I'm doing, I'm teaching a workshop on strategy games - and a few books, but... Anything else?"

His gun and his credentials went without saying. It was a sad but true fact that you never knew where a case might pop up, and it would be just his luck for something to come up on the island while he was there.

At least he wouldn't be alone if it did, not that Reid knew that.

"You have any posters, pieces of art," and he gave the kid a teasing grin "action figures, anything that you keep around to make it feel like home?"

After all, they'd all stayed in enough hotel rooms. He didn't need to feel like he was permanently on assignment for two months.

"Um, a few things. You think I should bring them along?" he asked, for confirmation more than anything else. He realised it was a good idea, even as Morgan suggested it.

Morgan nodded. Definitely.

"That place is going to be home for a few weeks. You don't have to bring the whole Galaxy Quest plate collection" he teases because he loves, really "but if you look at it every day, or it's part of your routine, it's worth an extra bag or two."

"Actually, I don't have the whole collection," Reid admits. "I'm still missing the twenty-year anniversary commemorative plate, and a few from the character collections..."

And it occurred to him just then that that might have been Morgan's subtle way of fishing for information; it wasn't as if he really told anyone what he liked, though every gift he'd received from the team had been nice, and a few even had been spot on.

The advantage of working with profilers was that you seldom had to tell your coworkers what to get for your birthday.

Morgan made a mental note to ask some of his suppliers about the twenty-year anniversary commemorative plate, since he knew more than a few of them worked in collectibles as well. He might get a bit of ribbing on the purchase, but he figured he could stand it just for the surprise he'd get to see on his friend's face.

"Well, whatever you've got, pack a few favorites up nice and bring 'em with you."

"I... think I will. Thanks, Morgan."

Reid smiled, as he thought about what he might pack. Maybe more than a few books; there were a couple of his favourites that he liked to have. Even though he could recite their text from memory, it was nice sometimes to have the text to read, to feel the pages in his fingers.

And maybe some DVDs...

Morgan didn't reply to the thank you, since he just figured he was doing his job as a friend, but he thought about it for another minute.

"You bring any movies? Tapes? Music? You do like music, right?"
