minutiae

Reading week isn't going to be much of a break for me--I've got all kinds of stuff going on (film shooting and editing, volunteering, catching up on errands I've been ignoring--I lost my cell phone in November and still haven't replaced it) plus enough homework to fill the whole week if I just studied for 8 hours a day, 7 days straight. But I'm taking yesterday and today to mostly relax, and just do maybe an hour of reading. Yesterday I was recovering from going out dancing two nights in a row (even when I don't drink I feel a little hungover the next morning, all dehydrated and achy and starving but a little nauseous from being dehydrated). I spent all afternoon on the internet reading things I normally don't have time to read, and then my sister and I watched the old standby, Prisoner of Azkaban (clearly the best of the Harry Potter movies). Then we chatted on the phone with my younger sister for a few hours. I got in a little bit of school reading and went to bed at a decent hour (1:00). I ate a mixture of junk (cookies, chocolate bar, popcorn) and healthy (raw carrots and tomatoes, guacamole with home-made whole wheat pita chips).

This morning I woke up and stayed away from the computer for a the first hour or so (usually I like to check my email right away while I wake up in bed, but I find if I stay away from it for a little bit it sets a good pattern for the rest of the day) and read instead (I am still reading Marge Piercy's Gone to Soldiers-- I love it but I sometimes read only a few pages a week while I'm in school. I softened some butter in the sunlight coming in the kitchen window and put it on some of my multi-seed sourdough bread. My sister made us berry smoothies with some of the berries we picked this summer. I'm finally listening to the Scissor Sisters CDs that my friend made me awhile ago (I am woefully behind on music and always will be, but I'm loving them). Later on I'm going to wash and lube my bike (my poor bike! it's caked in mud from riding in the rain and along the beach and through the park), do some laundry, do some dishes, and plan out the rest of the week. Also: sit around.

I ran out of the knitting steam that I always have just after Christmas, but I'm working away steadily on a pair of Pomatomas socks, and I'm going to finish the first one with an hour or so more of work. I did enough practicing fair isle that I will no longer be afraid of any pattern that includes it, although I'm not perfect yet. I still want to make a hat to practice some more. I started some armwarmers and I'm almost finished the second one, but they're sort of boring compared to the socks I'm knitting, even though they would come in really handy.

I have to make a blanket this week for my friend who's baby is due soon. I get a lot less knitting done when I'm not in class, but maybe I can work on it a bit while I'm doing some reading that doesn't require too much engagement or page-turning. We're also going to watch Reservoir Dogs and Sin City in anticipation of Grindhouse coming out soon, so I should be able to work on it during that.

harry potter, dancing, happy, knitting, chocolate, food, i'm a reader i'm no threat, grad school, freedom machine, editing, volunteering
