Title: Lucky
Fandom: Fullmetal Alchemist
Characters: Maes, mentions of Ed, Al, and Roy
A/N: Another of my one-shots. I rather like this one, even though it's short. :3 Much love for Hughes!

Maes Hughes feels like he’s the luckiest man in the world.

His best friend is practically a brother to him-knows him better than he knows himself sometimes, and the other way around too. His best friend is a state alchemist, a man with ambition, drive…a vision. He’s looking for power, to rise up the ranks like everyone else, but he wants that power to make the state a better place for everyone, especially those close to him-to make the state so that he never has to kill an innocent again.

He has a beautiful, wonderful, wife, who cooks him delicious meals in the morning before he goes to work and the late evenings when he comes home (and if it’s one of those overloaded days that he comes in after she and Elysia have gone to bed, he can always find something ready for him in the refrigerator with a note welcoming him home and telling him how long to reheat), and who takes care of the house and manages-miraculously-to keep up with the bountiful energy of their three-year-old daughter and still keep the house almost spotlessly clean.

He has a precious, three-year-old daughter named Elysia-the apple of his eye and the joy of his soul who can make the most ordinary, mundane things look like miracles of nature and once-in-a-lifetime events, and who welcomes him home every night as if he’s been gone a hundred years.

Though, Maes knows that he is blessed with not just one child, but three. He has a beautiful daughter, now going on four, but he also has two wonderful sons, now fourteen and fifteen. Two wonderful sons that had lost their mother, and lost faith in a father who left without a word. Boys who were strong and determined, with a fire in their eyes that reminded him so much of Roy, and utmost in their devotion and loyalty to each other. He marvels at their strength, having lost nearly everything at such a young age, but still having the will to push forward, to make everything right again, when other men would have lost hope and given up, said it was impossible to fix things now, and still with so much kindness and compassion in their hearts, not hardened by their losses but strengthened by them, and by the motivation to keep what little they had. Those wallets of his, which are always so ready with pictures of Elysia to show to the world, are beginning to fill up with pictures of the boys, too…playing in the snow, having a flour-fight while helping Gracia bake a cake…of those little things they do when they need to get their minds off of their losses and the arduous road ahead.

And as he watches them today, Al helping Gracia with the dishes after dinner while giving Elysia piggy back rides around the kitchen, and then Ed and Elysia exchanging presents on this, their shared birthday (Elysia a family of dolls she made out of popsicle sticks in preschool, and Edward using his alchemy to transmute for her the biggest teddy bear she has ever seen), Maes has to wonder how it was he ever got so lucky.
