Title: Humanity Within
Fandom: Fullmetal Alchemist
Characters/Pairings: Scar, Riza, can be seen as Scar/Riza, but...really isn't? xD;; Implied Royai as well.
Dedication: Um, to Flags and a girl on ff.net called Ruingaraf who are probably the only people who will actually understand this? And Taisa, cause he humors me and reads all my stuff and makes me feel awesome about my writing. xD
A/N: So um, this was supposed to be scene in an actual chapter fic I was gonna write, called "Humanity Within", and there's actually supposed to be a lot of build up to sweet scenes like this because obviously Scar and Riza shouldn't be like, on almost friendly terms without a lot happening. xD;; But the plot is kinda complicated and it's almost two am and I don't feel like describing it. If you wanna know the plot, leave me a comment and I'll get back to you. ^_^ This can be either anime or manga-verse, but I was writing it with anime Scar in mind, since that's all I actually know at this point? xD I've been told I characterize Scar like he is in the manga anyway though, so iunno. o.o
His attention is drawn by a quiet whimper in the night. Sleep hasn’t come yet-has not come easily to him in years. Sometimes he wonders if it ever did.
Crimson eyes drift to the side, not taking long to readjust to the darkness, to the form behind him. Soft noises that sound like crying filter into his trained ears, and by the light of the dying makeshift campfire, he can just barely see the tears leak out.
He can guess what it was she had been dreaming about. She had shared it with him a few nights prior, after his own sleep had been torn asunder and he had awakened her with screams from a time long past. It’s intriguing to him that even the non-alchemists of Amestris seem to believe and follow Equivalent Exchange…
For a few moments, he’s silent; there’s no sign he’s heard her or is even awake.
Then,
“Would you like to talk about it?”
The tone is gruff as always, but not harsh. There’s almost a note of gentility behind that deep, somber voice.
She seems surprised, and hesitates for a moment, but then sits up, only able to bring herself to stare at her lap. She won’t look into his eyes.
“…Blood. There’s no faces, just…blood. So much blood…”
She trails off and turns back over. He can see she just needed to say it; she expects no sympathy. He’s not sure if he could find it in his heart if she was looking for sympathy, but somehow, the fact that she isn’t fosters it anyway.
They’ve spent quite a bit of time together by now, wandering through the sands of the Eastern desert. He thinks he understands her better now, and she appears to understand him more as well.
It’s hard to hate someone when you’ve seen them at their most vulnerable.
Another few moments of silence pass between them, but for the sounds of her crying he can still hear. Finally, he makes a decision and gets up. He staggers slightly when he first gets to his feet, legs not taking kindly to the sudden burden of an injured torso upon them, but he steadies, and walks the few steps over to her.
He sits down by her side, no contact, just proximity, and just that alone seems to comfort her a bit, if only because it proves that she is not as alone as she must feel without that man.
“We’ll look for him again in the morning.”
His speech is terse once again, but not unkind, and this time it seems to have the desired effect. She stares at him for a moment, and then…a faint smile and her head begins to nod faintly, exhaustion finally taking hold again. He sits in that position by her side until she falls asleep, not moving or relaxing the tension in his muscles until her breathing becomes steady and regular once again. His mind will take much longer to idle, and he’s too tired to lie back down, but he tries to sleep anyway. He’ll need his strength in the morning, if he is to keep his promise.
