[When Karkat wakes up and hears the message play and feels the clamp of a collar around his neck, he doesn't spend a moment questioning the circumstances. He has no idea how this can have happened, but too many awful and deadly things have happened to him lately to spend any time wondering. He quickly tears open his backpack, examining the contents. His supplies are limited, but at least his weapon looks useful. He's never been riflekind before, but he can see the basics of how it will work. He wants to test it, but he doesn't want to give away his position or waste any ammo.
His next thought is to his friends. If he's here, there's a good chance Kanaya, Terezi, Sollux, and Gamzee are here as well, and the message was ominous on the subject of whether they could all survive this, but he's determined to make sure they do. That's his matesprit, his moirail, and two of his best friends, one of whom is blind and helpless right now. Well, two are blind, but only one is helpless.
With finding his friends his first priority, he examines his position. Remaining at the campground seems like a tactical mistake; it's too in the open and too obvious a hiding place, and doesn't have much defensive advantage. The others might find him here, but someone dangerous might find him just as easily.
To the south, the terrain looks rough. Getting high ground might be useful, but it might waste time. North looks like a better option; there's a hospital and restaurant up ahead, which might have some supplies, and making for the caves might be the safest direction to head.
He puts his backpack on and hoists the gun up, positioned to fire the moment he thinks it's necessary. He keeps low, staying within brush and behind trees when he can, pausing occasionally to stop and listen for any sounds around him. It's slow progress, but he's determined to remain unseen.]
