“It’s really all your fault that we’re down here,” Michael said.
Lucifer gave an aggrieved sigh, rolling his eyes. “Not again.”
This argument was getting old. Really, really, old. Even if it did change up the scenery to have someone else here with him, he was desperately missing the silence. And the seclusion. And the absence of this level of annoyance.
“I’m not picking a fight,” Michael huffed. “But it’s true, I just realized.”
Lucifer gave him a look. Michael, true to form, ignored him and plowed on.
“You said something about a song you referenced to Sam, just before he said Yes.”
“Yeah, you’re point?”
“What were the words?”
Lucifer racked his mind.
“I bet a fiddle of gold against your soul that says I’m better than you. What about it?” he said.
Michael closed his eyes, taking them in, sorting through Adam’s memories. Then he opened them and glared.
“Yeah, I was right. You jinxed the whole thing from the get go, little brother.”
“I did not!”
“Yes, you did! You had to go and reference a song about humanity outsmarting the Devil. Have you even listened to it?”
No, not directly, but he wasn’t about to admit it. His vessel, Nick, had parts of the lyrics stored away in his mind, and they’d filtered through and seemed appropriate, so he said them.
Sam, though, Sam knew all the words. Even though he and Adam weren’t there anymore (the cage was never meant to trap human souls) Lucifer and Michael still had access to their memories. It only took a minute to go through them. He felt his face go red and opened his mouth to retort, but nothing clever would come out.
“Shut up,” he managed, finally.
Michael sighed.
“You moron.”
